Nov-12-06 | | chessmoron: 37. d5?? Maybe 37. Kf1 Kg7 then 38. d5+...does it make it draw, though? |

 | | al wazir: Interesting. I found 35. Bxf7+ Kxf7 36. Qd5+ Kf6 -- but I thought white had a win after 37. Qd6+ Kg5. But it doesn't seem to be there now. How does 37. Re1 force a draw? |
Nov-12-06 | | RandomVisitor: 35. Bxf7+ Kxf7 36. Qd5+ Kf6 37.Re1 and now:

Nov-12-06 | | dzechiel: I saw the same stuff <al wazir> did. I didn't consider 37 Re1!. <sigh> |
Nov-12-06 | | RandomVisitor: 34.Bxf7+ also works to force the draw. |
Nov-12-06 | | Krebstar: i saw the draw too,good for me |
Nov-12-06 | | Fisheremon: <chessmoron: 37. d5?? Maybe 37. Kf1 Kg7 then 38. d5+...does it make it draw, though?> Yes, 37. Kf1 with an equal game, but you should consider two main variations 37...Red8 and 37...Rc6. |
Nov-12-06 | | percyblakeney: I was certain it would start with Bxf7+ and then Qd5+ but didn't see Re1 and since it is Sunday I expected it to be too complicated anyway and soon gave up. After seeing the solution it didn't seem that impossible (but by then it usually doesn't...). |
Nov-12-06 | | chessmoron: <Fisheremon> 37...Red8 38. Nd5 Rd6 39. Re3...it's still pretty much drawn. 37...Rc6 38. d5 Rc5 39. d6 Bxd6 40. Nd5 Rc8 41. Nf6+ Kg7 42. Bd4 looks still drawn to me. |
Nov-12-06 | | greensfield: Considered 35. Bxf7+ straight away and went down the line 35. Bxf7+ Kxf7 36. Qd5+ Kf8 37. Bb4+ with an inevitable mating attack. I thought I had cracked it, but on checking the solution, Black had 36...Kf6 so I missed 37. Re1. Still I didn't play the move in the game 35. Qxg4. |
Nov-12-06 | | vibes43: 35. Bxf7+ Kxf7 was my choice but I didn't see a way to win with that either. I think the key was to realize there was no win for white and I didn't so I can't take credit. But for me it was a good try. |
Nov-12-06 | | ahmadov: Great puzzle. I needed to check the position with Fritz 9 to understand it properly. The computer took half a minute to find the solution. I am not surprised that White did not find it as it is very computer-like solution (I hope it is proper English). |
Nov-12-06 | | olydream3: Fritz 9 gives the puzzle position a +3! |
Nov-12-06 | | Fisheremon: <RandomVisitor> In your 2nd line <17 0.32 37. ... a2 38.Qxa2 Rxc3 39.Nd5+ Kg5 40.Qd2+ Kh5 41.Rxe8 Rc4 42.Rd8 Rxd4 43.Nf4+ Qxf4 44.Qxf4> White could improve e.g. 42. Nf4+ Kh6 43. Ne2+ f4 44. Kg2 Bf6 45. Re4 g5 46. f3 Qc8 47. gxf4 Rc2 48. Qd3 gxf4 49. Rxf4 Bg5 50. Rg4 |
Nov-12-06 | | Karpova: I found it but it's probably hard to find OTB and quite understandable that Arakhamia-Grant failed to do so. It's easier if you know that there's something... |
Nov-12-06 | | Fisheremon: <RandomVisitor> In your 4th line
<17 0.42 37. ... Rxc3 38.Rxe8 Kg5 39.Kg2 a2 40.Re1 h5 41.Qf7 Kh6 42.Ne6 Bh8 43.Qg8>
the final position is lost for Black. |

 | | playground player: Shame on you, trying to trick us into making the same mistake Korchnoi made. We can all make our own mistakes! I did manage to avoid QxQ, and go with Bxf7+, Qd5+... but that was as far as I got. |
Nov-12-06 | | Rubenus: What is the puzzle? I don't see a combination. A normal game, that's it and nothing more. Are there no better games for Sunday? |
Nov-12-06 | | NBZ: Found all three moves Bxf7+, Qd5 and Re1 (this was the difficult one and I only found it after realizing that in all the variations, the rook on e8 guarding the e6 square really blunts the attack) So I would say I solved the puzzle.

Nov-13-06 | | kevin86: I had no clue on this one. The exchange of queens almost looks reflexive. White is doomed afterword ,despite bishops of opposite colors. |

 | | Richard Taylor: <Chesgames.com> I found Bxf7+ Qd5+ and number of possiblities and so on but I was looking for a win although it occured to me White was in difficulties - I think White may have been able to survive the ending if he played more accurately. <ChessGames.com> should give more information on what is going on in these puzzles or problems. We (I at least as a Premiuim member anyway) pay for this site - not for crap problems like this though. I wasted a lot of time looking for a win by White. |
