 | | yoozum: can anyone explain why this ended in a draw? i'm pretty sure korchnoi can easily promote and fritz gives him a +11.5 evaluation. thoughts? |

 | | percyblakeney: I think you've made some mistake with your Fritz, mine calls it a draw... If the h-pawn advances black sacrifices the bishop for the g-pawn. |

 | | Gregor Samsa Mendel: After 49.h5 Bxg5 50.Kxg5 Kf6 black draws because white has the infamous "wrong color bishop" for his h-pawn. White might try to finagle a situation where he doesn't wind up with wrong-color-bishop-plus-h-pawn, but if someone with Korchnoi's endgame skills thinks it's a draw, then it's probably a draw. |

 | | Gregor Samsa Mendel: Darn. The last couple of times I was first on the draw with these types of questions. Guess I'll have to hang up my shootin' irons and ride off into the sunset. Giddyup, Tonto! |

 | | MidnightDuffer: L E Johannessen vs Korchnoi, 2004 Both of these are extremely close; this game does appear like a draw by a hair; |

 | | Gregor Samsa Mendel: In another wrong-color-bishop-and-rook-pawn-ending, Korchnoi did try to squeeze out a win, but to no avail: Korchnoi vs Karpov, 1978. In the present contest, he may not have been in a mood to play out a game where the number of moves could have would up surpassing his age in years. |

 | | MidnightDuffer: I don't know about that; I try not to discrminate against anyone on the basis of age, race, national origin, handicap or creed. |
