Franz the Stampede: <Are you Italians are aware of the very famous remark of Johan Cruijff Dutch greatest football player: ´The Italians cannot win from you but you can lose from them´!> I personally knew this one because I've always been more a dutch supporter than an italian one...

arielbekarov: <Republic of Texas> USA finished on 4th place, if I am right.

Uruguay was winning over Brazil in the final. Sweden finished on the 3rd place and USA 4.

USA was winning over England. USA did GREAT !

I cannot resist this one !

Brazil is the only World Champion, five times !, who was NOT able to win in their own country. They played for 200.000 spectators in Maracano stadium, Rio De Janeiro 1950.

Brazil is the ONLY country who has qualified for all World Cups, and now they are as the first worldchampions facing the new rule that they have to qualify for 2006.

As far as it looks they will do it in the very hard competetive South-American zone.

Sorry ! For all this, but soccer gives me so much joy !

AND CHESS !!!!!!!!!!!

The Brazilian commentators if Bruzon wins :

Bruzon is winniiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiing ! Ariel

Republic of Texas: <arielbekarov>: Uruguay 1930, won by Uruguay over Argentina, 4-2, in Centenario Stadium. There was no 3rd place game, so the US and Yugoslavia tied for 3rd/4th.

Brazil 1950: US over England 1-0 at Belo Horizonte. Sir Stanly Matthews sat out that game. In those days, no substituting allowed. Uruguay defeated Brazil in what turned out, by pure chance, the championship game, 2-1 after trailing 1-0. There is talk about making a movie about the US win.

Blunderbuss: <Republic> The problem with that movie will be the same as the problem with all histoic movies made by Hollywood... they contain little history... no doubt you'll be portrayed as winning the world cup against all the odds thanks to an divinely scripted diving header by Tom Hanks following a mesmerising run down the flank by the gritty and real character of Bruce Willis... :]

bernieno: White is hesitating, did he expect Nh4? If he does not take the knight on e4 he better play Bf4. 21...Nxg3 22fxg does not look good for white

Republic of Texas: <blunderbuss>: [Last non chess kibitz on this chess game thread by me] Movie script to be based on THE GAME OF THEIR LIVES by Geoffrey Douglas. I own a copy of the book and if the script is faithful to the book, the movie will be accurate.

arielbekarov: <Republic of Texas> My sincere APOLOGIZE ! I didn't see 1930, the first World Championship. I have read it as 1950.

The result of the final is wellknown, but I have forgotten about USA and Yugoslavia.

You know a lot about soccer !

If somebody starts with soccer, I am lost !
How many happy moments !

Blunderbuss: <Texas> [Also last non chess kibitz] Okay, that'll be worth viewing then... no offence was intended in the last post by the way, my view is perhaps a little biased.

Blunderbuss: So is Bruzon about to lose a pawn? He doesn't appear to have compensation... what am I missing?

Dick Brain: <Blunderbus> no there is not the blunder of a pawn here; this is all known theory.

bernieno: <Dick Brain> Wow, Bruzon is obviously well prepeared. I wonder if Leko is aware of these variations.

Dick Brain: I don't know if Leko is aware of the prior games, probably not. I'm pretty sure Leko can tell that Black's penetrating rooks on the c and d files and active queen will make up for any temporary pawn loss. Leko wont be able to hold the extra material.

Blunderbuss: Okay, so it appears Leko played Bf4 quite quickly and it's Bruzon who's thinking... maybe he did see the theory of the Nxe4 line :] I fear Bruzon may be repeating his performance against Anand...
