As Horowitz and Reinfeld point out in "Chess traps, pitfalls and swindles" (p.54), 9.Bxg4! wins a piece.

Jul-30-11  zooter: thanks phony benoni...i came here to confirm why 9.Bxg4 was not played. I was reading "The Most Instructive Chess games Ever Played" vt Irving Chernev and was using "Chesstempo" to play through the game "Foltys vs Golombek 1947" (game # 28 in the book) when I saw that this was a side variation which ended in a draw! so rushed here to check on the comments~
