Normal is the exchange variation (4.cxd5 Nxd5 5.e4 Nxc3 6.bxc3) or the Russian variation (4.Nf3 Bg7 5.Qb3 dxc4 6.Qxc4) <4...Bg7!?> (normal is 4...Ne4) <5.e3!?> 5.Bxf6 and 5.Nf3 are stronger. <5...Ne4
6.Nxe4 dxe4 7.Qb3 c5!?>
click for larger viewA kind of gambit-move that attacks White's center and also b2 with my dark-squared bishop. I also calculated in advance 8.dxc5 Qa5+ followed by 9.Qxc5. <8.Qb5+! Nd7 9.dxc5> I didn't foresee this and at this point thought I was simply a pawn down and thought it would be better to get my king safe by castling so that I can also mobilize my pieces. <9...O-O 10.c6?> A mistake by White, perhaps my opponent was hoping to trap my knight or that I would bring it back to b8. But after this move came a very unexpected and very powerful attack! <10...bxc6
11.Qxc6 Qa5+!>
click for larger viewI figured this would be the best move because at least it gains a tempo, prevents White from castling and attacks the bishop on g5. But Crafty actually recommends 11...Rb8 12.Be2 (12.Rb1? Bc3+!;12.O-O-O? Qa5!;12.Bf4? Qa5+!) 13.Kf1 Qxg5 <12.Kd1 Rb8!?> This seems the logical move but 12.Ne5! is actually stronger (with lots of difficult combinations into account, though, so quite understandably I missed it) <13.a3??> I have no idea why my opponent made this move. <13...Rxb2!> Threatening mate on d7 in the next move. <14.Qd5?> This indeed prevents Qd7, but loses to 14...Qa4+!. But actually White can only
delay the mate with 14.Nf3 exf3 15.e4 Qc3 16.Qa4 Nc5 17.gxf3 Rd8+ 18.Qd7 Rxd7+ 19.Bd3 Rxd3+ 20.Bd2 Qxd2#. <14...Qa4+!> 0-1 Black resigns because checkmate is approaching fast: 15.Ke1 (15.Kc1? Qc2#) Bc3+ 16.Qd2 Bxd2+ 17.Ke2 Bc3# click for larger viewA game that ended unexpectedly quick in a nice miniature! |
