 | | kingscrusher: May I ask if the hilarious annotations of this hillarious game are subject to copyright by Hans Kmoch, or can people put this annotated game on their website?! |

 | | kingscrusher: And another question/ improvement suggestion for Chessgames.com : 1) Shouldn't the annotator of a game be clearly credited, and perhaps with a link to their player homepage on this site. In this game, the annotator according to Chess cafe is Hans Kmoch, yet I do not see his name mentioned on the annotations. 2) Shouldn't the copyright status of the annotations be indicated. It might benefit the popularity of chess if annotations which are in the "public domain" are clearly noted as such, so that annotated games can be more available on the Internet. I hate to be pedantic about these things, but it is also a Chessbase built in standard to indicate the annotator of a game. Feedback welcome from all |

May-12-06 | | MagnaPsygnosis: The person who did this to Aron Nimzovich's Iron chess laws are most probably equal or even weaker chessplayer than Waitzkin, Carlson, Ponomariov or Bruce Pandolfini. the funny-level of this game can only be decided on, if the motive of this action is totally clear.. PS.. Nimzovich would beat any player alive today except (Karpov, Fischer, Kasparov) |
|
May-12-06 | | euripides: Tha annotator was Hans Kmoch and, according to Keene's book, Nimzowitsch was amused by the parody. I think Kmoch did a similar parody of Gruenfeld as well; I do not know of any other instances of this interesting and demanding literary genre. Kmoch was not as strong a player as Nimzowitsch, but he was strong, and American players who knew him said that he was very strong indeed in positional understanding. The intent of the parody was not malicious; Kmoch was malicious only when writing about Alekhine, where he had some reason. This is a small-scale literary masterpiece. |

 | | kingscrusher: I discovered from the chesscafe article final paragagraph that the annotator was Hans Kmoch:- http://www.chesscafe.com/text/mysys...
Magna... Nimzovich apparently found this very amusing. Check the final paragraph of the above chesscafe refence please. Regarding "Overprotection", it is becoming clear to me that not many people have a clue what Nimzovich was talking about. Additionally, the concept actually was evident in the play of Steinitz long before Nimzovich formerly labelled it. Here is an example from a game of Steinitz cited by Keene in its reappraisal of Nimzovich:- Steinitz,William
vs.
Weiss,Miksa
1882, Vienna - Round 11, Vienna, ECO C00

The particular reason I don't think this is a well understood concept in its finer details, is that in the key examples of Nimzovich such as the Advanced variation of the French defence, White gives up occupation of the center - in particular the d4 pawn with dxc5, to faciliate overprotection of e5. I think to overprotect e5 from say a bishop on b2, there cannot be a pawn on d4. Feedback welcome from all. |

.... I c what u mean... In that case I think it is hillarious myself...lol

Jul-07-06 | | RookFile: I absolutely love the note about - of course not 5... Nc6 because of 6. Bb5 - Kmoch got this quite right. Here you got Nimzo all worried about overprotecting e5, not noticing that white has just tossed his bishop out the window (6...Qa5+ etc.) Then after all this total fascination of a single positional concept throughout the whole game, with both sides missing tactical shots at each turn, white sets a cheap trap and black falls into it. Right on, Hans Kmoch!

Jul-07-06 | | Ziggurat: Yes, this is hilarious. Kmoch's parody probably hits home partly because he also knew Nimzo on a personal level. Kmoch wrote this appraisal of Nimzowitsch: http://www.chesscafe.com/text/kmoch... |

Jul-10-06 | | Runemaster: <RookFile: I absolutely love the note about - of course not 5... Nc6 because of 6. Bb5 - Kmoch got this quite right.> Yes, but let's revisit one of the funniest moments from one of this site's most "famous" kibitzers in his day: <Jaymthegenius: I find this to be a very beutiful game, however I would have to disagree with Nimzovich on Naturally not ...Nc6 6.Bb5> |
|
Jul-10-06 | | Runemaster: And just to conclude this little walk down memory lane, <jaymthegenius> (mental age: 4 years, six months) then claimed: <Jaymthegenius: There are too many inappropriate remarks on this page, judging by all youre insulting remarks I will have to put most of you in the range of 6-15 years old.> I laughed all over again when I followed the thread starting from <Karpova>'s list of favourite kibitzes. |

Nov-15-06 | | chesed: Yeah. This game is not credible. Systemsson played like a kid, whoever he is. Overprotection must not come alone though. It's a good strategy but I think Nimzo put too much effort for that in this game. If Black played accurately, there's no way White could have won after "achieving a position where e5 is overprotected". Or else it would be a draw. Overprotection must come with active prophylaxis though. Like Karpov-Timman, Montreal, Pirc Defense. To me, this game is the true win by the elegant strategy of overprotection and active prophylaxis. This is pure positional play. |

Nov-16-06 | | TheSlid: Where have all the bloody irony detectors gone? I blame <Rookfile>. |

 | | Domdaniel: Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear, indeed. Of course any 1930-ish player reading Kmoch's great parody would have seen all the 'tactical shots' at once. And would, like Nimzowitsch, have appreciated the ironic <hommage>. The very idea of feeding this stuff to an angine and getting worked up over the result is itself weirdly hilarious. Is there any chess writer alive today with a style worth lampooning? And is there anyone who could produce a parody of them worth reading? Hmm. Just wait for my next annotated volume of Kasparov's 'My So-called Successors'... |

Nov-16-06 | | RookFile: Oh dear is quite right. |

Nov-16-06 | | setebos: Domdaniel, does your avatar ever blink? It must have a bad case of dry eye :) |

Nov-16-06
 | | Domdaniel: <setebos> - <does your avatar ever blink?> No, but if I jiggle the mouse just right I can make it appear to leer... |
|
Nov-16-06
 | | Domdaniel: Ouch - <feeding this stuff to an angine> - did I say that? I meant <feeding this stuff to a camputer> |
|
Nov-16-06 | | euripides: If you fed this stuff to an angine it would develop engina. |
|
Nov-16-06 | | flamboyant: these annotation were hilarious, i knew it was fake but i tought Nimzovitch just wrote that to joke a little :D
Anyway its nice to see some humour in chess! |
|
Nov-16-06 | | Resignation Trap: Hans Kmoch did not mention it, but his annotations to this game were a result of a collaborative effort of a dozen great players as seen in this photo: http://www.rogerpaige.me.uk/histori... .
Seated, left to right are Vladimir Alatortsev , Hans Kmoch , Grigory Levenfish , Ilya Leontievich Rabinovich , Georgy Lisitsin , Max Euwe and Vitaly Chekhover .
Standing, left to right, Mikhail M Yudovich Sr. , Peter Arsenievich Romanovsky , I. Golubev, Nikolai Nikolaevich Riumin , Ilia Abramovich Kan and Mikhail Botvinnik . If these players can't come up with convincing analysis, nobody can! |
|
Nov-16-06 | | mack: What a delightful find! |
|
Nov-16-06
 | | Domdaniel: Aha. <Kan> - the originator of a certain line in the Sicilian, now very familiar to fans of Arno Nickel. I just knew this game had to be relevant somehow... |
|
Jan-05-07 | | WarmasterKron: Playing through this game makes me half-tempted to take up 2.h4 as a serious response to the French. It can't be as bad as my old friend 2.e5, right? |
