  dakgootje: What about 20. fxg7 Nxd2 21. gxf8Q Qxf8 22. Bxf8 Kxf7 23. Rxd2, theres got to be something wrong with that...but what is it..
Feb-21-06  likestofork: <dakgootje> 20. fxg7 can be answered by 20....Re8 21. Bxc4 dxc4. 'Answered', admittedly, might be a little bit strong of a word in this case, because white should still have a pretty easy win, but there does wind up being a continuation to the game.

20. Bxg7 leads to mate. Why let your opponent have even the semblance of a whiff of a trace of an opportunity for a possible cheap shot?

dakgootje: <likestofork> ah yes 20. ...Re8 and black isnt lost yet.

while writing my previous post i thought the mate wasnt forced (didnt look for saving moves) and i thought: 'Well if it isnt forced mate, the fxg7 would probably be better', but it isnt =)

Landman: 20.fxg7 also wins. During the game, I originally looked only at 20.Qg5 Qxf6 and 20.Bxc4 dxc4 21.Nd5, both of which are good for Black. Then I noticed the 20.Bxg7 Nxd2 21.Rh1! possibility and spent a lot of time working out whether Black could stop the mate. I didn't see a way and so I went for it. Had 20.Bxg7 not been so promising I probably would have switched to 20.fxg7. Easy to say in hindsight.

I checked 20.Bxg7 with a computer afterwards; there is no defense.

perfidious: An elegant conclusion by White, beginning with 20.Bxg7.

This surely merits a PotD.

Landman: The critical try at refutation is 21...Ne4 intending Nxf6 0-1. White must take the N but which way is best? The Queen is coming with Qb6-Qg1-Qg2-Qh3! stopping the mate on h8.

I finally calculated 20.Bxg7 Nxd2 21.Rh1 Ne4 22.Bxe4! Qb6 23.Rxh5 Qe3+ (Qg1+ 24.Nd1) 24.Kd1 Qg1+ (Qxf3+ 25.Bxf3) 25.Kd2 Qg2+ 26.Ne2 Qh3 27.Bh7# and then couldn't find any better defensive tries. Black is simply one move too late. If White had wasted a move recapturing the Nd2, Black could have then defended and won.

Aug-12-12  solskytz: So, <Landman>, what did these people you wrote about, around March 2012 on the Stumpers page, have in common, not shared by any others?

I never saw you answer up on that one..
