kingscrusher: Black has to play 6...Bxf2+ which can potentially lead black to a slight advantage after going two pieces down in some crazy variations! I think this is the scariest variation a Ponziani player has to face. The so-called Vukovic Gambit.

MissScarlett: In his notes to H Kennedy vs S Boden, 1861, Boden credits <5...Bc5> to George Fraser.

kingscrusher: <MissScarlett> Yes I am working on a course on the Ponziani and will provide both names. My personal favourite is Vukovic because it may be named after Vladimir Vukovic

who has the classic book on the art of attack. Lichess opening explorer and Chessgames seem to prefer the Vukovic gambit but on Youtube i was definitely aware of the Fraser Gambit. Now I am a fan of Frasier series though.... :)

Perhaps, but I take note of the game V Mechkarov vs M Vukcevich, 1957. Are <Vukovich> and <Vukcevich> practically synonymous?

Feb-12-25  stone free or die: I think there's some similarity, but I don't think to the point of being "practically synonymous" (but I could easily be wrong):

<The surname Vukčević is a Serbo-Croatian patronymic that comes from the male name Vukac. It's pronounced "ʋǔktʃeʋitɕ" in Serbian Cyrillic. >

<The surname Vukovich is a Slavic patronymic that comes from the Serbo-Croatian word vuk, which means "wolf". It's a common family name in Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, and Montenegro>

Both from google's AI overview.
