Kibitzer's Corner
Dec-24-05  organist: Is this the stem game for 6.Re1?
Jul-01-12  optimal play: By the end of this game the Black pieces have been boxed in the corner and the imminent loss of further material makes the situation hopeless, but what's surprising is that when this was played in 1864 Louis Paulsen was considered one of the best chess masters in the world, yet the relatively unknown Victor Knorre completely outplayed him!

And yes <organist> it does appear that this was the first time 6.Re1 was played in the Ruy Lopez, closed variation; so this game stands as quite an accolade to Knorre and perhaps even a somewhat significant game in the history of chess.
