Phony Benoni: The pun is good, though it takes some explanation--at least for me. <The Devil Wears Prada> was a popular book and movie several years ago and Armani, like Prada, is an Italian fashion house.

I used to play this line with Black back in my college blitz days, and would accompany each Black move from 4...d5 to 11...exd3 with a hearty "Begone, Churl!". It was a lot of fun, but I never quite acquired he knack of playing with the energy and inventiveness Black needs to succeed in the line.

The game follows K Arakhamia-Grant vs Smyslov, 1996 up to Black's 24th move. There White played 25.gxf3, and after 25....Qxf3 26.0-0-0 was able to mount a decisive counter-attack with the help of the open g-file.

Here, White was unable to do either. Perhaps this was not a situation to worry about pawn strucure.

Nov-14-13  King Sacrificer: <Phony Benoni: I used to play this line with Black back in my college blitz days.>

Isn't this line the best response against <4. Ng5> anyway? Which better line made you abandon it?

Nov-14-13  hedgeh0g: <King Sacrificer: Isn't this line the best response against <4. Ng5> anyway?>

It's my line of choice, although some people swear by the Traxler (4.Ng5 Bc5!?)

Either way, if you play the Two Knights in response to the Italian Game, you need to be prepared to gambit at least a pawn.

Nov-14-13  dakgootje: If I recall correctly, there was some alternative with 5. ..b5 6. Bxb5 Qxd5 7. Nc3 Qxg2 8. Qf3 Qxf3 9. Nxf3 and black is probably completely fine.
Nov-14-13  Alphastar: <dakgootje> Things become interesting after 5. ...b5 6. Bf1! however.

Phony Benoni: <King Sacrificer> Should have make it clear that it wasn't the opening I gave up on, but the shtick. Shouting "Begone, Churl!" during a tournament game is frowned upon.

Why, I cannot imagine.

Mine as well, on the (very) infrequent occasions I faced 4.Ng5.

The Traxler/Wilkes-Barre has some appeal against an unwary opponent, same as the Marshall; but all the fun tends to go out of things if White plays 5.Bxf7+ Ke7 6.Bd5.

Nov-14-13  Castleinthesky: Hold the Limayo, hold the lettuce, special orders don't upset us, all we ask is that you let us, do it your way at...?

What is the fast food chain?

Nov-14-13  kevin86: White resigns because of the a-pawn,the one that will beat him.
Nov-14-13  whiteshark: "Let me know when your whole life goes up in smoke. Means it's time for a promotion."

Nov-14-13  ChemMac: <kevin86> Quicker is pushing the g and h Pawns. White cannot stop a pawn getting to h3, followed by Rxg2 and checkmate. Rook spite checks can only delay this; the R has to return to its back rank eventually.
