Kibitzer's Corner
Jun-21-05  Runemaster: A strange game. At the end, Randy has to show that he knows how to win with B+N v K, but before that he has to get through the unusual situation of B+N v 3P.
Dec-03-05  Chopin: Great game. Bishop and Knight Vs King are very hard endgames. Technique is crucial, otherwise the games can go on for ages.
Dec-03-05  Koster: Personally I wouldn't play this out against anyone over 2200 and white was clearly much better than that.
Dec-03-05  Chopin: <koster> good point! I think most masters and GMs can play BN v K in their sleep.
Dec-03-05  aw1988: You would be really suprised. In Dvoretsky's works he shows dozens upon dozens of 'tragicomedies'.
Apr-22-06  blingice: I wish I could do this. I don't think I'll get into the situation enough to spend my time on it though.
Oct-11-06  blazerdoodle: Set it up with Fritz9. It's astonishing watching Fritz9 crush me in positions and situations I didn't even know were possible. It is a mind boggling endgame.
Oct-11-06  TrueFiendish: The plan is simple but not so simple to carry out: force opposition king to corner of opposite colour to that of your bishop. Then force along rank or file to adjacent corner and mate with one of several formations.
Oct-11-06  syracrophy: Awesome!

I can't believe I drew a game where I had K+B+2 N vs. K I felt incredibly embarassed. I really need to learn how to win with bishop+knight vs king

achieve: Yes, keep practising -- I have been doing that for two months now and it pays off bigtime.

64. Ba4 was the better way to go, grabbing that a4-e8 cut-off diagonal... 64...Ka5 then simply 65 Bd7 foll by 66. Ne6 - and the lone King is unable to escape the corner of doom...

Mate within 10 moves if you practise this for a while in order to have a remedy against every attempt of escape, and to drive the King to a8.

PRACTISE!!

Jul-24-08  ravel5184: I have been practising KBN vs. K thirty minutes a day for two weeks and I still don't have it completely down! I get confused when it is that I have to let the King off the back row.
May-28-09  sfm: <Koster: Personally I wouldn't play this out against anyone over 2200 and white was clearly much better than that.> I have seen a couple of strong players fumble here, and overstepping the 50 move limit. Great fun, and after having seen that, today I'd play on. At the least one could get a refresher on how it was done. :-)
May-28-09  WhiteRook48: I overstep the move limit in this situation all the time
May-28-09  vajeer: I think black missed
37...c6 if
38 Bxc6 then Ra2

  Golden Executive:
