  fredthebear: In the final position, Black is forced to interpose the rook in response to the White queen's check with 34...Rd8. White will then skewer the Black king with 35.Ra8+. The Black king is forced off the back rank, leaving the Black rook attacked twice by the White x-ray battery. Therefore, the forced rook interposition loses the helping piece.
