Kibitzer's Corner
Dec-03-10  KingG: Nice game. After 20.Qc7 it looked like Black was in trouble, but there were a few tactical points that enabled him to seize the initiative.

If 22.Nxd6, then 22...Qg6+ 23.Kh1 Nexd5, and the undefended rook on b1 means taking the night will be good for Black.

If 23.Nxd6 then 23...Ng3+ 24.hxg3 Qh5+ 25.Kg1 hxg3 26.Rf2(only move) gxf2+ 27.Kxf2 Bg4!, with a winning attack.

sleepyirv: Smirin writes in King's Indian Warfare (a must own for all KID aficionados) that Gavrikov withdrew from the tournament during the adjournment for this game. Not only did the game have to be adjudicated a win for Smirin, the result ended up not counting toward the tournament's standings.

Despite that, Smirin considers it one of his best games. Or perhaps that's the reason why. The enjoyment of art for art's sake.

sakredkow: I was trying to decipher what FL56+ meant in the tournament heading - it must be related to Gavrikov's games.

Retireborn: <sakredkow> FL = USSR first league, and the 56 indicates it was a qualifier for the 56th USSR ch, which was held next year.

Retireborn: Oh, and the plus sign is a carry over from Chessbase, who use this to distinguish games that didn't count in the final standings, as <sleepyirv> explains.
