ray keene: this game contains quite a nice rook sac
Dec-21-08   YoungEd: I think White's idea with 22. Ne1? was to clear the f3 square, kick back the knight with an f3 pawn move, and then pick up the exchange with Bd6. But Black had enough time to thwart this and come up with a better counterattack. I'm not good enough to come up with a better plan, though! Should White offer a knight exchange on d2, or perhaps try Qa3 for some Q-side action? Hard to say. His pawns look nice but it's tough to come up with a constructive plan. Nice finish by Black!

ray keene: 22 Nd2 offering the knight trade is completely equal-white loses the game by trying for too much when black has fully equalised and also still has plenty of dynamic factors in his favour should white overrreach.nick patterson went on to win the irish championship .
Dec-22-08   YoungEd: Hey, I got one--sort of! :) Thank you, <GM Keene>.
