notyetagm: The alternative 41 Kxh2 loses to 41 ... Qxa2+, the Black queen mating on g2 after unsupported interpositions by White.

notyetagm: 40 ... Rh2+!! is the sting in the tail of Kholmov's combination.

If White meets the check with 41 Kxh2, then he is mated on the <loose g2-mating focal point> after 41 ... Qxa2+ 42 Qb2 QxQ+ 43 Rd2 QxR+ 44 Bf2 QxB+ 45 Kh1 Qg2#.

Instead if White captures the Black h2-rook with his b8-queen by 41 Qxh2, then he has <stalemated> his king by <self-blocking> the h2-flight square. The result is again mate on the <loose g2-mating focal point> after 41 ... Qf3+ 42 Qg2 Qxg2#.

The <looseness> of the <g2-mating focal point> is the fatal flaw in the White king position. The Black queen gains control of this square <with tempo> (for free) in both variations by checking the White king on the same move it accesses this critical square.
