 | | moronovich: Always check a check. |
Jan-24-17 | | et1: beautiful and easy once you spot the move..not this time. |
Jan-24-17 | | lost in space: <<patzer sees check, patzer makes check.> ----Fischer>
I am a patzer, so
33...Bg1+ 34.Kxg1 (only move) Rf1+ 35.Kh1 (only move) Rh1# |
Jan-24-17 | | morfishine: Deflect with check: <33...Bg1+> forces the King to where the rook can finish ***** |
Jan-24-17 | | johngalt5579: you want to play Rf1 with check, so Bg1 with mate in 2. |
Jan-24-17 | | whiteshark: Kholmov's im-pietzsch-ment*
*yes, it's homophone to <peach> |
Jan-24-17
 | | perfidious: <whiteshark>, that is why I submitted W Pietzsch vs Fischer, 1965 with the pun <Eat a Pietzsch>. |
Jan-24-17 | | whiteshark: <perfidious: <Eat a Pietzsch>> :) |
Jan-24-17 | | moodini: I suffered a double failure today.
I found the 'solution' Qb3 with white to play, that would have walked straight into Bg1 which I had completely missed. If you hear nothing of me in the coming weeks it might be that I walked under a bus, that I was meant to be catching. |
Jan-24-17 | | zb2cr: Black would like to play ... Rf1, followed by ... Rh1#. However, if that sequence is played right away, White gets in Rd8+ with unpleasant results. This gives the hint we need: 33. ... Bg1+; 34.Kxg1, Rf1+; 35. Kh2, Rh1#. All forced. |
Jan-24-17 | | mel gibson: Was this a blitz game?
They seem to playing like a bunch of clowns. |
Jan-24-17
 | | gawain: Tricky! Black sacrifices the bishop so that ...Rf1 comes with check. Very nice. |
Jan-24-17 | | patzer2: Missed the mate-in-three for today's Tuesday puzzle with the decoy sham sacrifice 33...Rg1+ and 34. Kxg1 Rf1+ 35. Kh2 Rh1# to follow. Instead, I went for 33...Rf1 34. Rd8+ Kf7 35. Qb3+ Ke7 36. Qxe3+ Kxd8 (-9.69 @ 22 depth, Deep Fritz 15) which is also winning. For a White improvement, I'd ditch 13. b4 e5 = (-0.21 @ 29 depth, Komodo 10.2) in favor of the more popular move 13. Nc3 = (0.19 @ 23 depth, Houdini 4) as in Navara vs M Harshkou, 2015 (which transposes from 12. Nc3 0-0 13. a3 =). According to the opening explorer at
http://www.chessgames.com/perl/ches..., Black has won six games out of seven after 13. b4 and the last time a Master tried it was in 2008. That's enough reason for me not to avoid 13. b4 in favor of 13. Nc3 or 12. Nc3. |

Jan-24-17 | | kevin86: White will be mated in his cubby hole! |
Jan-24-17 | | ChessHigherCat: <leRevenant: At what epoch was that?> Dans les bons vieux temps, the 90s. Why, you too? |
Jan-24-17 | | stacase: <Mayankk: ... more satisfaction than the usual Tuesday ones.> Bingo! |
Jan-24-17 | | SuperPatzer77: <patzer2: Missed the mate-in-three for today's Tuesday puzzle with the decoy sham sacrifice 33...Rg1+ and 34. Kxg1 Rf1+ 35. Kh2 Rh1# to follow.> <patzer2> you made a typo: (33...Rg1+). The correct one is 33...Bg1+ Big opps, LOL |
Jan-24-17 | | BOSTER: I saw the final pos, but did not see how to get there
Puzzle should begin one move before. |
Jan-24-17
 | | Bubo bubo: Black could set up an unstoppable mate threat with 33...Rf1, but this would allow 34.Rd8+ with a dangerous counterattack. Therefore we need a <vorplan>, which wins the vital tempo: 33...Bg1+ 34.Kxg1 Rf1+ 35.Kh2 Rh1# |
Jan-24-17 | | Sularus: weak white bank rank |
Jan-24-17 | | Sularus: 33. ... Bg1+
34. KxB Rf1+
35. Kh2 Rh1++ |

I lived in la ville lumiere from 1967 to 1971 and sometimes played tennis in le jardin du luxembourg, but chess was played in a nearby café. |
Jan-25-17 | | ChessHigherCat: <leRevenant: I lived in la ville lumiere from 1967 to 1971 and sometimes played tennis in le jardin du luxembourg, but chess was played in a nearby café.> Wow, that's a bit of history. The café owner must have kicked the chess-players out (as business-minded people tend to do eventually) because now they play chess right next to the tennis courts (on the l'Orangerie side). |
Jan-31-17 | | clement41: @<Bubo bubo> : thanks for having added my game C Lelievre vs M Francois, 2015 to one your game collections! It is far from sound but highly entertaining. |
Feb-01-17 | | Mrs Butterworth: I went through some steps.
1. "This is easy. Just drop the rook on f1 and watch White squirm." 2. "Hmm. 34. Rd1 is ... um ... interesting. It stops the mate, and if I take, the queen checks on b3 and recovers the rook." 3. "And then there's 34. Rd8+...."
4. [Unprintable]
5. "Hey! What if I could get in the rook move with *check*? Is that possible?" 6. "33. ...Bg1+! 34. Kxg1 (what else?), Rf1+ 35. Kh2, Rh1#! (I couldn't post this when I wrote it, but here it is. Better late than never, right?) |
