plang: This was the last in a series of ten training matches that Piket played between 1993 and 1999; all eight games were drawn. 10 Nb5 in the Vienna variation experienced some popularity after Karpov used it three times in his 1993 match with Timman; 10 Bxf6 and 10 Bb5+ have been the most popular lines. 13 Re1 was new; an improvement over 13 Nc7 which Karpov played in game 14 of the Timman match. Karpov built up a powerful two bishop position which led to Piket sacrificing a pawn with 25..Nf8?!. The alternative 28..Qc5+ 29 Kh1..Qxc3? would have lost on the spot to 30 Rd8+. Karpov missed two promising possibilities with 29 Rd8+..Rxd8 30 Qxd8+..Kh7 31 Qxb6 or 29 Rxe6..Rf5 30 Rd8+..Nf8 31 Ree8..Rxf6 32 Rxf8+..Kg7 33 Rg8+..Kh7 34 Bd3..Rg6 35 Rxb8 which would have given better chances than the game. 35..Rxc3 would have been the easiest path to a draw. 41 Kf2 was Karpov's last chance to keep at least some advantage.
