Aug-11-05  Raskolnikov: Yeah, I`m the first to kibitz this beautiful game! The show begins with 24.Bh6! Then rook-sac on the 26th move. 27...Kf8 is the only move since 27...Kf6 28.Qg5 mates. The position after the 27th move of black could be a puzzle for e.g. Thursday. 28.Nf5 a great move!! There is a threat of Qh6 and 28...ef clears the 6th rank allowing 29.Q:d6 Qf7 30.Qh6 mate. Actually, Lomineishvili could resing after 28.Nf5.

dzechiel: Saw the first two moves, but not 28 Nf5, the move that the whole combination hangs on. Great play by Lallemand.

al wazir: I missed 28. Nf5. Besides being anything but obvious, that seems to be the only winning move.

jahhaj: Nf5 is also winning on move 27 (as RV points out). As soon as I'd seen this move I knew I'd got it although it took a bit more checking to see that it worked.

For me the key point of Nf5 is in the line where Black tries to run her king to the queenside, clearing the e pawn from the 6th rank lets White catch him.

25.Bxg7+ Bxg7 26.Rxg7 Kxg7 27.Nf5+ exf5 28.Qg5+ Kf8 29.Qh6+ Ke7 30.Qxd6#. The last move would not have been possible without the knight sac. The open sixth rank is also handy in the line 25.Bxg7+ Bxg7 26.Rxg7 Kxg7 27.Nf5+ exf5 28.Qg5+ Kh8 29.Qf6+ Kg8 30.Rg1+ Kf8 31.Qxd6+ Qe7 32.Qh6#.

Strange week for me, missed Tuesday got Wednesday, missed Friday got Saturday.

jahhaj: White's opening line is worth a try if you fancy something different against the Sicilian. I used to play it with fair success until I gave up 1.e4.
Jul-08-06  DAL9000: I actually thought the answer was 27. Qg5+ Kf8 28. Nf5 f6 (28... exf5 29. Qh6+ Ke7 30. Qxd6#) 29. Qh6+ Kf7 30. Qxh7+ picking up the Queen, but, uh... I guess the forced checkmate in the game is a slightly better outcome, huh?
Jul-08-06  EmperorAtahualpa: Awesome combination! Saw the moves up until 28.Nf5.
Jul-08-06  monad: <24....g6 > rather than 24....Bf6, would have kept Maia out of the mire.

Jul-08-06  Longbrow: Attacking g7 is natural after 23...Kh8;however the vision to follow through is impressive.

dakgootje: Great puzzle! I tried making 27. h6 work... but it didnt turn out too well ^^
Jul-08-06  Tariqov: My solution was far different from the game's one(mine's incorrect ofcourse),i got after 26...Kxg7?! 27Rg1+?Kf8 28Nxe6+?fxe6 29Qh6+Ke7 30Rg7+Bf7 31Rxf7+ and Qxh7 with a won ending(not a simple one),thought of Nf5 but quickly discarded it because there was no obvious reason why it was played(which is to open the d-file for a deadly check Qxd6+).Nice puzzle.
Jul-08-06  TrueBlue: got it, Two in a row! Nxf5 was the only move I had to really think about. But after I saw it, things fell in place.
Jul-08-06  Ziggy2016: The line I came up with was 26.Qg2 f6 27.h6 Bg6 (27...Ra7 28.Nxe6) 28.hxg7+ Qxg7 29.h6.

outplayer: I saw it till 28.Nf5!. Instructive.
Jul-08-06  cyruslaihy: i saw 25 Bxg7 Bxg7
but i followed by 26 h6 then line up the queen for check mate, would it work?

ahmadov: Cannot black continue with Qe7?
Jul-08-06  thatsmate: I thought white would play 26. Qg5! Why doesnt that work? I've been trying to see black's response to that, and I cant... can someone point it out to me?
Jul-08-06  GilHamilton: <ahmadov> 30. ... Qe7 falls to 31. Qh6+ Kg8 32. Rg1+ Kh8 33. Qg7# or something a little longer involving black losing her queen.

ahmadov: <GilHamilton> Yes, quite right, thank you.
Jul-08-06  GilHamilton: <thatsmate> Black can respond with 26. ... f6, which defends the bishop and takes a critical tempo away from white by threatening the queen. White has to back down, and is now at a material disadvantage.
