He fled for the first world war and went to Switzerland. He learned to play chess there and continued his studies. In 1919 he returned to Belgium. He played for the clubs of Luik and of Antwerp. However, he lost matches against Knappels and Colle. After that he disappeared from the chess scene. He achieved two draws against Alekhine; one in consultation with Knappels and the other, the day after in a simul.
