Sep-12-11  SimonWebbsTiger: @<AGOJ>

Gary Lane wrote a book based on the Advanced French some years ago. Sveshnikov has recently put out an exhaustive treatment on it; he has made a career out of 3. e5, too! Those couple of books and a decent compilation of games should be fine.

The Advance holds no terrors for Black, of course, but it has the boon of containing many thematic French ideas without allowing the Winawer, which seems to be the line which bothers you. In fact, the Advanced french is as good an excuse to revisit <My System> by Nimzowitsch since quite a few of his ideas are based on the those structures; Nimzo was a die hard 3. e5 player himself.

Apropos the Fischer-Kovacevic game. There is a story that the Russians helped Kovacevic during that game; but they only suggested the killing moves, he apparently related afterwards!

Sep-12-11  SimonWebbsTiger: ps. Another boon for the Advance is that the theory isn't as razor sharp so it is quite a practical choice. The Tarrasch and, IMHO best, 3. Nc3 can both lead to quite forcing play which does require a bit of variation memorisation to avoid being blown off the board.
Sep-12-11  AGOJ: @<SWT> Thanks to you as well; I will check the advance variation. In the past I felt (maybe influenced by a friend) that White is capitulating by advancing, but I will look at it.

perfidious: <AGOJ> This game should be part of any serious French player's education: Nimzowitsch vs Systemsson, 1927.
Sep-12-11  whiteshark: <perfidious> I'm in complete agreement with you! :D
Sep-12-11  TheFocus: Yes. 1.e4 e6 2.h4!! completely busts the French.

Herr Systemsson quit chess after this game.

Sep-13-11  SimonWebbsTiger: Hans Kmoch's parody - reprinted in eg. <Nimzowitsch: A Reappraisal> by Keene - evoked a chuckle from the great man, to finish the story.

LIFE Master AJ: BTW, I thought that the capture on e5 was impossible, due to QxP/g7, my opponent saw a bit farther than me ... the sack of two Rooks is a nice touch, even though it had been done before.

All I have is losses in the CB (on-line) DB, talk about your taxation without representation ...

Sep-13-11  Colonel Mortimer: A crushing example of the failure to castle.

Y'ever hear the one 'bout the pot 'n the kettle?

<BTW, how many championships have you won lately, loser?>

Yes, this is the measure of a person....

You had your go, but it's past history now.

<Of course, this game is also in all the DB's, including the CB one ... All I have is losses in the CB (on-line) DB, talk about your taxation without representation ...>

Other DBs are rather more selective than CG has been at times; tain't their bag to serve as an online equivalent for the old Euwe work 'Chess Master vs Chess Amateur', or in your case, 'I crushed some 850 player! I'm frigging awesome! Come watch the glorious display, as I overcome stout resistance with my immense brilliance and make mincemeat of the poor wretch, who in any case never had a chance whilst facing Great Genius'.

Sep-13-11  diceman: <AGOJ: Hi guys, thanks for the replies and tips; I could certainly use some anti-French ideas. Are there any books (besides Watson's) that you recommend?>

2.d3 is the move I don’t like to see.

It was good enough for the young Fischer.
(even played it older)

perfidious: Better be a little quicker with that 'delete' button next trip, lol.

'Course, you'll likely go whining about how you were wronged anyway......

Sep-13-11  Robed.Bishop: Frankly, I'm surprised AJ didn't play it out to mate. The cameras must not have been on his board.
Sep-13-11  RMKvdS: <LIFE Master AJ> Well at least <Colonel Mortimer> is nicer, maybe change it back to a dinosaur?

perfidious: <Robed.Bishop> Nah, he took one for the team that day and deigned to allow the camera crew to watch a couple games involving mere 24-2500 players.
Sep-15-11  ProjectR: <AGOJ> You can kibitz on opening variations, just click on the eco at the top of the page,in this case (C17) and it takes you right there, there's some good info too including notable games, popularity graph,etc..

LIFE Master AJ: All I want to say is:

A.) Ignore the trolls.

B.) Applaud my opponent for playing a great game.

Oct-05-11  hedgeh0g: I think you exceeded the word limit on your assignment.
Oct-09-11  hedgeh0g: The most annoying thing about these selective purges is that they tend to render remaining posts (such as the one above) meaningless.
