khense: Pretty surreal around move 25. I guess black won.
Oct-12-05   Marius: 18... Rc2 and 19... Ne4, the ugly bishop on c1 and the knight on b3 which is dominated by the b6 Bishop

gives black a strong position

Oct-12-05   prinsallan: <Marius> Ugly or Bad Bishop? - or Both? Poor little Bishop. Nice comments though.
Oct-12-05   Averageguy: Why didn't black play 13...Nd7-e5/c5-d3 hopping into the wonderful outpost?
Oct-12-05   aktajha: <averageguy> Van den Doel was obviously wanting to bring his king to safety first and after Cekro's pawn push he got an even better outpost; but now he showed his pacience by not bringing his knight directly in. He found a way to cramp white's position by Rac8 and only THEN brought his knight to a marvellous outpost.

If 13...Nd7? 14.Nxc5 Nxc5 15. d4!? Pxd3? 16. Bxd5 with a better position for white then the actual game and much counterplay.

By bringing the Bishop back to b6, Van den Doel saw he was dominating the knight, and a trade wouldn't be in his favor (White wants trades; cramped position).

Therefore I think directly playing the knight would get a ? by notation (giving up part of the edge)

Oct-12-05   Averageguy: <aktajha> Good points, but after your line: 13...Nd7 14.Nxc5 Nxc5 15.d4 then black can simply hop in with 15...Nd3+, instead of taking the pawn. The game continuation might be better, but this line also looks good.
Oct-12-05   AlexanderMorphy: great sportsmanship by Cekro, resigned at the right time!
Oct-12-05   EmperorAtahualpa: What is so special about this GOTD? A pretty mediocre rapid game.

By the way, "Doel" is pronounced something like "Dool" in Dutch so the pun doesn't really work..

I disagree and think this is more than worthy of GOTD.

I have no idea how to pronounce the name "Doel" but I would guess you certainly got out of bed on the wrong side this morning, didn't you!?

You may know how Euwe is pronounced too. Is it "erve", "you" or something else <EmperorAtahualpa>?

Oct-12-05   aktajha: According to the official International Phonetic Alphabet I'd say Euwe is pronounced as:

ø v @.

kevin86: "On the Doel" would have worked, but it's rather cruel.

It took me until he latter moves to find that Doel had won the game. White is down three pawns with the inferior bishop-my query is:why did he resign out of turn at this time?

Oct-12-05   WarehouseMan: Another nice alternative to blacks game could of been:

14...Be2
15.Re1 Be3

With the bishop there, whites d pawn and black bishop don't have much mobility.

dakgootje: Doel to pronounce as D=normal d, oe like in shoe, and a normal l, so you get....Doel!

Euwe:

eu: well in english you call the Euro in phonetic something like Jouro well the ou-sound in that is something like the eu. But a better example is the Danish kind of pennys: the Øre (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C3%98re), where the first part (Ø) is pronounced as the eu-part of Euwe

the second part of the name (we) is pronounced as wûh

So phonetic youll get Øwûh :)

isnt it very simple? :P
