  MaxxLange: <freeman8201> If 23...gxh6, the best I see is 24 Qe4 f5 25 exf6 e.p. Nxf6 26 Qxc6 recovering the piece

Carlsen probably had something better planned....

and Black is going to lose a pawn. His pawn structure is a disaster and there is no counterplay in sight. I'd call it a technical win.

Dec-02-09  tranquilsimplicity: Carlsen is sooo..good that I suspect he may one day reach 3000+ rating in this lifetime. The guy is both extremely good positionally and is EXPLOSIVE tactically! Long live Lord Carlsen!!
Jun-22-11  azax: Ah, Internet Memes! Classy, classy puns. I admit, I've thought about this play on words a bit before...

Great game by the future World Champ.

Jun-22-11  DanielBryant: With all the chess games I have seen in my lifetime, I am not that easily impressed, but Bh6 was a truly beautiful and unexpected move. Even seeing the position is ripe for combination, it is a far from obvious move.

FSR: Hole won his first two games against Carlsen, drew the next two, and then lost the next two, including this one. http://www.chessgames.com/perl/ches...

Check It Out: <azax> Could you please explain the pun.
Jun-22-11  cjgone: #%&$ing magnets, how do they work?

Look it up, it's a meme.

Jun-22-11  azax: <cjgone>'s got it. (I don't wanna talk to a scientist -- y'all mofos lyin', and gettin' me pissed.)

I'm sure Mr. Hole couldn't have been overjoyed after this game.

kellmano: Just checked out the meme. Musically I think it's quite good.

Were it not for the youtube comments I'd have sworn it was being sarcastic. Lines like 'I fed a fish to a pelican at Frisco Bay. He tried to eat my cell phone, he ran away.'

Check It Out: 23.Bh6 and 24.Bxh7 are star moves, but the moves that caught my attention were the set up moves 19.Qg4, 20.Re1 and 21.Bd3 which made the attack possible. Without those moves the star moves aren't possible.
Jun-22-11  sfm: <MaxxLange: If 23...gxh6, the best I see is 24 Qe4 f5 25 exf6 e.p. Nxf6 26 Qxc6 recovering the piece Carlsen probably had something better planned....

Maybe 24.Nxc6. After 24.-,Qxc6?! 25.Qe4 there are nasty problems, as -,f5 26.exf6,Nxf6 27.QxQ becomes too expensive, and 26.-,Rf7 27.PxB,RxP 28.Qe5+ is murder.

scormus: I wondered about 23 gxh6 as I played it through, surely it loses doesnt it?

<sfm 24 Nxf6> as pointed out ... Qxc6 would be a disaster. Only credible line I can see is 24 ... f5 25 exf6 Nxf6 and if 26 Qxe6 then ... Ng4 gives B some counterplay, might even be winning.

So maybe 26 Qd4 which seems to maintain the edge. Interesting line

Jun-22-11  sfm: <..,f5 25 exf6 Nxf6 and if 26 Qxe6 then ... Ng4 gives B some counterplay, might even be winning. > Luckily for White he has 27.Ncd4, which again turns the tables, with Black pieces hanging all over the place. However, it could appears that 23.-,gxB was truly a tougher defence.
Jun-22-11  TheTamale: Sorry, I didn't play over the game, so I can offer no comment. Rather, I checked out the link to that god-awful Insane Clown Posse song and then leapt off a 20-story-building.

erniecohen: Black was doing okay until 22...Nc6; 22...g6 would have held things together.
Jun-22-11  Sho: For alternative puns, see Oystein's CG page.
Jun-22-11  Dr. J: After 23...Gxh6 24 Nxc6 I think Black's best is 24...Rg8 25 Qe4 Rg7 26 Ncxa5 with advantage, but the line 24 Qe4 f5 25 exf6 e.p. Nxf6 26 Qxc6 still seems White's better choice.
