Jonathan Sarfati: This was Sarapu's first ever loss in a New Zealand championship. Feneridis was Wellingon's top player for many years, but Sarapu was clearly stronger over the board, with a big plus score. But Fenny was superior at correspondence, beating Sarapu in a 10-game match, and also had a good win in an telegraphic inter-city chess match.

This game really wasn't one of their best. The QGD exchange variation is rather insipid if Nf3 is played too soon, because Black could have developed his QB to f5 on move 7. And White's 8.h3 makes sense only if he meets ...Ne4 with Bf4. White made it too easy for black to equalize. But Black made a catastrophic blunder with 22 ... Qc7.
