  notyetagm: Bummer. Black played 17 ... Qb4? in order to provoke White into playing 18 Nc6!, a knight fork of the Black b4-queen and b8-rook. Black's point was that after 18 ... Qc3?? he threatens both 19 ... Qxc6 winning a piece and 19 ... Qg3#.

Unfortunately for Black, White does not have to meet these threats after 18 ... Qc3??. Instead he can use his active c6-knight, mobile h1-rook and d1-queen, and the open h-file to play an <Anastasia mate>! Black threatens mate in one but White threatens mate with checks and its his move so he gets his in first!

After 18 ... Qc3??, White forces the <Anastasia mate> with 19 Ne7+ Kh8 20 Rxh7+! Kxh7 21 Qh5#.

You have got to know your basic mating patterns cold. Knowing this pattern cold gave Nogueiras and cost Todorovic a full point.
