keypusher: Is this game legit? I can't believe there was this much Marshall theory in 1938.

  heuristic: doesn't 33.Re8+ draw?
33..Kg7 34.Qg1 and after the Q exchange, it's pretty even.
Mar-10-11  rapidcitychess: <keypusher> The game considered illegitimate, because this is a lot of modern Marshall theory.
Jan-30-13  erniecohen: <heuristic> is right; 33. Re8+ is a draw. 32. Qxg3 (missing a 2-move mate) was a massive blunder, but White had probably already prepared himself to resign.

I agree, it is hard to believe. Marshall introduced 11...c6 in Jack Battell vs Marshall, 1938, and Kapfer played the move the same year in this game and also in Mross vs T Kapfer, 1938. Apart from this game, 12.d4, obvious though it is, wasn't played until Pinkus vs B Altman, 1944; 13.Re1 wasn't seen until M Christoffel vs H Steiner, 1945; 18...bxa4 wasn't played until Novopashin vs Spassky, 1963; 20...Qh5 wasn't played until C Nederkoorn vs S Noorda, 1974; and 21...g5 wasn't played until Tal vs Geller, 1975. Heaven knows why someone would want to fake this game, though. Maybe we should ask him: Peter Heaven.
