wwall: This game was played in the Clube de Xadrez São Paulo (CXSP) Championship in January, 1966. Mecking was 13 and Souza Mendes (1892-1969) was 74 and had won the Brazilian championship 7 times. Mecking won the CXSP championship.

Perhaps 24...h6 and 25...Bg5.

Perhaps better is 25...Qc7 or 25...h6.

26...Bd8?! looks dubious. Perhaps 26...Bxd5 27.Nxd5 Qd4+ 28.Kh1 Qxb2 29.Raf1 Bd8. Or 26...Rg8 27.Nxf6 gxf6 28.Qh4 Rg5 (28...Rg7 29.Qxf6 Rg8 30.Re1 Qc5 31.R1e3 and 32.Rh3) 29.Rh3 h5.

27...g6?? looks like the losing move. Perhaps Black can survive after 27...Bxf6 28.Nxf6 gxf6 29.Qh4 Rg8 30.Qxf6+ Rg7 31.Rg3 Rcg8.

Jul-20-06  Rocafella: <wwall> Sorry, this is off topic, but I read your website with players and causes of death. Do you think it's a coincidence a lot of the top players and indeed many others, died of heart attacks? Do you think that pressure and stress gets to professional chess players? Thanks!

wwall: I will have to research whether this is a coincidence or normal for any profession for heart attacks. I have listed 24 top players who have died of heart attacks, and I am sure there are a lot more. At the same time, there are a lot of top chess players who have lived way beyond their normal life span. Overall, I think chess players live longer than non-chess players. At least they are less likely to have Alzheimer's disease and more productive in their later years. For the Russian chess players, it seems like heavy drinking and smoking shortens their lives.
Jul-21-06  Rocafella: Just seemed like a big coincidence thats all! Thanks!
