Kibitzer's Corner
Aug-11-21  Brenin: 30 Rxh5+ Nxh5 (30 ... Kg7 or Kg8 31 Qg5+ with mate to follow) 31 Rh1, and the N cannot move or be protected, so Rxh5 and Qg5 will lead to mate.
Aug-11-21  drollere: i had 30. Rxh5+ Nxh5, 31. Rh1 Rc2 (or Bxe2), 32. Rxh5+ Kg8, 33. Qg5+ Kf8, 34. Rh8# (or 31. .. Kg8, 32. Rxh5 Kf8, 33. Rh8+ Kg7, 34. Qh6#). the pawn on f5 along with the Q blocks the K from any defense.
Aug-11-21  King.Arthur.Brazil: I already see this game before. The combination started with 28. ♘xe5 is amazing. Must be pointed out that: 30. ♖xg7+ ♔f8 31. ♖af7+ ♔e8 32. ♕xe5+ and check mate next. I guess that Spassky felt very bad after the game, since he was his first Interzonal and his only 18y old, a most young grand master ever. He finished 11th while Panno (very strong player that time) reached 3rd.
Aug-11-21  mel gibson: I saw that in under 2 seconds.
Another Monday puzzle standard
or maybe I'm an Einstein?
Aug-11-21  stacase: Pretty obvious for a Wednesday.
Aug-11-21  Walter Glattke: 30.Rxh5+
A) 30.-Nxh5 31.Rh1 f6 32.Rxh5+ Kg8 33.Qh6 Kf7 34.Ne6 Ke8 35.Qxa8 Bxe2 36. Nf8# B) 30.-Kg8 31.Rh8+ Kxh8 32.Rh1+ Kg8 33.Qh6 Nh5 34.f6 Bxe2 35.Rxh5 Bf3+ 36.Nxf3 gxf3+ 37.Kh3 f2 38.Qg7/Qh8# examples, many ways to mate, better here 31.Qg5+ Kf8 32.Rh8+ Ng8 33.Q/Rxg8#
Aug-11-21  Cheapo by the Dozen: Good Wednesday puzzle.

It's obvious that the game line is an appealing try. And one could rightly try it at blitz speeds based on Spielmannesque faith.

Strictly speaking, however, there are enough Black defensive tries to consider and dismiss that this isn't really a Monday or even Tuesday puzzle.

An Englishman: Good Evening: More than one solution here. 32.Qh6 also seems to work, but slightly slower.
Aug-11-21  Brenin: <King.Arthur.Brazil>: I think your posting refers to yesterday's POTD, <Panno vs Spassky, 1955>, rather than today's.

Teyss: <Cheapo> Agreed, Wednesday all right because one has to understand why 30.Qg5 or 31.Qg5 do not work: ...Bxe2 threatens ...Bf3+ covering h1 for the WR.
And as pointed out by <An Englishman>, 32.Qh6 is a side solution, thus according to CG rules not the solution.

I think these debates about being the right/wrong day level are not (completely) futile: they indicate how difficult the puzzle is for most kibitzers, hence allows oneself to estimate his/her solving strength. If I fail solving a POTD and everybody says "Sooo easy", I'll switch to tic-tac-toe.

Aug-11-21  saturn2: 30.Rxh5+ Nxh5 31.Rh1 pins the knight with mate to follow
Aug-11-21  agb2002: White has a knight for a bishop and a pawn.

The semi-open h-file suggests 30.Rxh5+ Nxh5 (30... Kg7(8) 31.Qg5+ Kf8 32.Rh8+ Ng8 33.Q(R)xg8#) 31.Rh1:

A) 31... Kg7 32.Rxh5

A.1) 32... Kf8 33.Rh8+ Kg7 34.Qh6#.

A.2) 32... Rh8 33.Qg5+ Kf8 34.Rxh8#.

A.3) 32... Rg8 33.Qh6#.

A.4) 32... f6 33.Qh6+ Kf7(g8) 34.Qg6+ Kf8 35.Ne6# (or 35.Rh8#).

A.5) 32... Kf6 33.Rh6+ Kg7 (33... Ke5 34.Qf4#) 34.Qg5+ Kf8 35.Rh8#.

A.6) 32... e5(6) 33.Qh6+ Kg8 34.Qh8#.

B) 31... Kg8 32.Rxh5

B.1) 32... f6 33.Qh6 and mate soon (33... e5 34.Qh8+ Kf7 35.Rh7#).

B.2) 32... Kf8 33.Rh8+ Kg7 34.Qh6#.

B.3) 32... e5 33.Qh6 as above.

B.4) 32... Bxe2 33.Qg5+ Kf8 34.Rh8#.

C) 31... Rh8 32.Rxh5+ Kg7(8) 33.Qg5+ Kf8 34.Rxh8#.

D) 31... Rg8 32.Rxh5+ Kg7 33.Qh6#.

E) 31... f6 32.Rxh5+ Kg8 (32... Kg7 33.Qh6+ transposes to A.4) 33.Qh6 transposes to B.1.

Aug-11-21  johnnydeep: Damn, I overlooked the rook on a1 and so didn't see how promising the game line ultimately was. Funny that the board is only 8x8 and yet I often fail to see it all.
Aug-11-21  Whitehat1963: This one was also easier than Monday?s puzzle.
Aug-11-21  timeclimber: Finding the best move for White at 29th (29.f5 as played) would have been a pretty solid puzzle for Wed or Thu.
