 | | Bobwhoosta: Magnus applying a slow squeeze, seems like a Karpovian sicilian! |

| Jan-23-06 | | prinsallan: Well done again Magnus, Im still hoping he will win class B. |

| Jan-23-06 | | Runemaster: A very mature game from Carlsen. Nice. |

| Jan-23-06 | | EmperorAtahualpa: 39.Bh5! a very beautiful move..
<chessgames.com> Perhaps 39.Bh5 is an idea for a puzzle! According to Crafty, play could continue like this after the final position: 39...Nc6 40.Bxf7 Nxd4 41.Kxd4 exf5 42.e6 Ba4 43.e7 f4 44.Ke5 d4 45.Kxf4 Bb5 46.Bd5+ Ka7 47.Ke5 d3 48.Bc4 Be8 49.Bxd3 (eval. +3.25; depth 17 ply; 170M nodes) |

 | | tamar: 28...Nb8 looked all wrong during the game. Vescovi must have thought long and hard before rejecting 28...f6 28...f6 29 exf6 Nxf6 30 Bd3 giving Black the choice of two bad endgames 30...e5 31 fxe5 Ng4+ 32 Ke2 Nxe5 33 Nc5
Nxd3 34 Kxd3 with a winning good knight versus bad bishop endgame or
26...Kc7 27 Nc5 where both white's pieces are better than Black's |

| Jan-23-06 | | Veryrusty: While we're criticizing GMs :), I'm no fan of Vescovi's move 25-26-27 sequence allowing the Rooks to come off. (Maybe spending all day yesterday watching Topalov-Gelfand has rotted my brain.) In these endings, it's much harder for the superior side to make progress when there's a rook apiece on the board, because if you go roaming, the defender's rook does as well, whereas once the Rooks are gone the superior side seems to be able to apply simultaneous pressure with much less counterplay. |
