| May-25-12 | | LoveThatJoker: <prbprb2: If 83... Kxh6, isn't 84. Rf4 much simpler than 84 Rg8 ?> 83. Rg5+!! Kxh6 84. Rf5 is bad due to 84...Rxf5 85. Kxf5 Kg7 86. Ke6 Kf8 = LTJ |
 |
| May-25-12 | | SamAtoms1980: Yep, I went for pkkandel's 83.h7, missing 83....Rf6+. 83.Rg5+ is the winning idea, but you have to follow it through. |
 |
| May-25-12 | | CHESSTTCAMPS: In this R&P ending, white's 2 extra pawns are so close to promotion that it may look difficult *not* to win, but there are a couple tempting candidates that toss both pawns, e.g. 83.h7?? Rf6+ 84.Ke5 Kxh7 85.Re7 Kg7 draws. Also, 83.Re2(/e3/e4)?? Rf6+ nabs both white pawns. By process of elimination (or by knowledge/quick insight), one can find the winning move. 83.Rg5+! is a winning diversion sac:
A) 83... Kh7? (or Kxh6?) 84.Rg8 and white promotes the f-pawn without a Lucena maneuver. B) 83... Kxg5 84.h7 Re1+ (..Rh1? 85.f8=Q Rxh7 86.Qg8+ Kh6 87.Kf6 is too easy) 85.Kd5 (or Kd7) and white will soon promote one of the pawns with a theoretically won K+Q vs K+R ending where there is more work for white to do. Time for review.... |
 |
| May-25-12 | | CHESSTTCAMPS: <Dzechiel (old post)> and <Jimfromprovidence:> both cite the line with improved resistance for black. |

 | | sevenseaman: I'd say <83. Rg5+> sets up the win for White. Simple K maneuvers follow after the R capture (which is 'undeclinable' if I am to coin a new word). The best Black can do is;
<83...Kxg5 84. h7 Re1+ 85. Kd7 Rd1+ 86. Ke8 Re1+ 87. Kf8 Rh1 88. Kg7> and 1-0 as Black cannot stop a promotion in this position; click for larger viewwith Black having the move.
Not too difficult if you keep precision. At move 85. Kd7 or Kd6 both work equally. e.g. 85...Rd1+ 86. Ke7 Re1+ 87. Kf8 and transposes to the main line. |

 | | morfishine: <pkkandel> Thats the position I was angling for; I had forgotten the term for it (Lucena position). Thanks for pointing that out |
 |
| May-25-12 | | Tired Tim: Oh, you know the song ... "Undeclinable, that's what you are .... undeclinable, in every way... you move your rook, that's what you say, but it's your king, that's in the way ... and that's why my rook, is undeclinable now" |

May-25-12
 | | FSR: 83.Rg5+! wins:
(a) 83...Kxg5 84.h7 Re1+ 85.Kd7 Rd1+ 86.Ke8 Re1+ 87.Kf8 Rh1 (87...Ra1 88.h8(Q) Ra8+ 89.Kg7) 88.Kg8 Kg6 89.f8(Q); (b) 83...Kxh6 84.Rg8! (fastest) followed by f8(Q);
(c) 83...Kh7 84.Rg7+! K moves 85.Rg8 followed by f8(Q). |
 |
May-25-12
 | | agb2002: White is two pawns ahead.
The black king is too close to both pawns. This suggests 83.Rg5+ to separate him: A) 83... Kxg5 84.h7 wins.
B) 83... Kxh6 84.Rg8 wins.
C) 83... Kh7 84.Rg8 Rf2 (a waiting move) 85.f8=R wins. The promotion of a queen could lead to stalemate. |

 | | whiteshark: <83.Rg5+!>, and that's it. |
 |
| May-25-12 | | Al2009: Not so difficult, indeed. A classical example of deviation/dirigement, having White 2 pawns near to promotion. |

 | | dakgootje: Ah.. so apparently 6 years ago I found this problem of wednesday/thursday difficulty. My puzzle-solving strength must be diminishing. |
 |
May-25-12
 | | Memethecat: I got : 83Rg5+ Kxg5 84h7 Re1+ after this I expected the K to march towards the R, avoiding the pawn file. This fails when the K reaches the 5th rank & the R goes to the 8th. A good endgame lesson. |
 |
| May-25-12 | | Abu Dina: I don't think this should be set as difficult, medium maybe but not difficult. First time in months I managed to work it out in a few second. LOL |
 |
| May-25-12 | | mistreaver: Wow, this looks like a cool endgame puzzle.
There are virtually only 2 moves,
the sacrifice of the rook and h7 advance.
So let's try the more obvious one :
83 h7 Kxh7
Now white can try either:
84 Rf5 Rxf5
85 Kxf5 Kg7
86 Ke6 Kf8 draw
or:
84 Ke7 Kg7
85 Rg5+ Kh6
86 Rg8 and wins
But i think immediate Rg5+ is more forcing
83 Rg5+ Kxg5
84h7 and wins
or:
83 Rg5+ Kxh6
84 Rg8 and after checks white wins
Time to check.
----
Not to hard, but i wonder, does my line with h7 also win=
Full point for today, that makes it 3/5 this week. |

but,
83... Rf6+
and black wins both pawns. |
 |
| May-25-12 | | poszvald: Misteaver, black would respond to h7 with Rf6+
1) in case white king moves to row 7, than balck Rxf7+ wins both pawns
1) in case white king moves to row 5, than balck king captures pawn h, and after some easy steps the other pawn as well |

 | | James D Flynn: 83.h7 Kxh7 84.Rg5(not Rf5 when Rxf5 85.Kxf5 Kg7 draws) Re1+ (if Kh6 or Kh8 85.Rg8 wins) 86.Kd7 Rd1+ 87.Ke8 Re1+ 88.Kf8 Kh6 89.Rg2 R any 90.Rh2+ Kg6 91.Kg8 Rf1 92.f8(Q) Rxf8 93.Kxf8 wins. |
 |
| May-25-12 | | raul555: I feel great, I realized the solution easily. I'm getting better, ha ha. |
 |
| May-25-12 | | Zatrikion: 83.Rg5+ And white must win!
if 83..Kxg5 84.h7 and white wins the ending game (K+Q vs K+R) if 83..Kxh6 (or Kh7) then Rg8 1-0
This must be the solution |
 |
May-25-12
 | | chrisowen: Traverse eg ko 83.rg5+ or h7? You one idea think it aint wobble given hook rook cam f6 and draw cab in g5 takes a pawn push h7 and elope king air goes right check rooke1 the main point left a kit rook sac one stop is it from in.
83.g5+ kxg5 84.h7 re1+ 85.kd7 rd1+ 86.ke8 re1+ 87.k8 r1 88.kg7 |

 | | chrisowen: Not too difficult " hcf " hanging clop frame, nip and tick at one stage surmount he have recline on the too linger booth an monarch escort it to leave in promote nigh h8 or f8 crack it open in shut. Mean smooth finish brook it wallow engage too many it surge in side low cant catch either in manage put in good it down in almost a gg rook slide ar eg nifty it thing in pawn it secret aria f and h combine too kick leg home gorgon rook ewok sacrifice g5 lion it ratchet look see i. |
 |
| May-25-12 | | dragon player: White has two far advanced pawns. You should distract the pieces which prevent the pawns from promotion. Therefore I think this is the solution: 83.Rg5+! Kxg5
If 83...Kxh6, than... hmmm, I don't anything. Hang on, this works: 84.Rg8!. Black can give a lot of checks, but white just walks down to the second rank via this route: d5-e4-d3-e2. 84.h7
and black can't stop both pawns.
Time to check.
------------
In the game, black tried to stop the pawns, but he couldn't
do it.
5/5 |
 |
| May-25-12 | | TimothyLucasJaeger: Black threatens to win white's f-pawn, so white needs to take action. 1) <83 Re2>, intending to meet Rxf7 with Rg2+ and Kxf7, is repulsed by <83 ... Rf6+ 84 Ke7> (84 Ke5 Rxf7 85 Rh1 Kh7) <84 ... Rxf7+ 85 Ke6 Rf2> (but not 85 ... Rh7 86 Rg1+ Kxh6?? 87 Kf6) <86 Rh1 Kh7>. 2) <83 h7>, threatening to meet the capture of the f-pawn with promotion of the h-pawn, fails to <83 ... Rf6+ 84 Ke7> (84 Kd5 Kxh7) <84 ... Rxf7+ 85 Ke6 Rxh7> 3) <83 Rh5> doesn't work because of simply <83 ... Rf6+> (or 83 ... Rxf7 at once) followed by Rxf7 4) <83 Rf5> runs into <83 ... Rxf5 84 h7 Kxh7 85 Rxf5 Kg7 86 Re6 Kf8> 5) <83 Rg5+ Kxg5> (otherwise Rf5 wins for white) <84 h7> and black has no recouse but to check the white king, which can hide at f8. Then white can try Ra1 intending h8=Q Ra8+ but then the f-pawn queens. So the last try after white's Kf8 is Rh1, but white simply replies Kg7 and black must resign. |
 |
| May-25-12 | | TimothyLucasJaeger: whoops slight miscalculation 83 Rg5+ Kxh6 84 Rf5 doesn't win for white, 84 Rg8 is the move |
