Sep-15-07  Giearth: Just to make <Alphastar's> point clearer, Tigran Vartanovich Petrosian is not Tigran L Petrosian. They are two different people. ;) Ahh, silly me... ;p
Sep-15-07  patzerboy: Play through Petrosian's games. He was as tactically astute as anyone. (You pretty much have to be at that level, anyway. Without tactical ability, all the positional feel in the world won't get you very far.) His style was a play-it-safe, careful one (limiting the opponent's options), but when tactical opportunities arose, he jumped right in.

keypusher: Yee-haw! If this game had been played in 1883 rather than 2006, it would be world-famous. Not often nowadays that the big sacrifices get made on the board rather than in the notes. Nice of Black to play all the way to the mate.

ahmadov: When I saw the game on the home page I thought this was the elder Petrosian, but then I saw his rating and the year of the game. Still, the game is very interesting...
Sep-15-07  King mega: haha....Tigran petrosian..not the world champ!
Sep-15-07  xKinGKooLx: A great game, with a excellent combination at the end. Another good pun for this game would be "Eye of the Tigran", because Petrosian has a sharp eye out for combinations like this.

Open Defence: I was thinking like <Minasian Field> for the minefield Minasian's King walked into
Sep-15-07  spirit: the ending is like archilles' slaughter of hector in troy!
Sep-15-07  MarkThornton: A lovely mating conbination.
Sep-15-07  dabearsrock1010: if i was black i do not think i would have castled kingside. I would have tried d5, Bd7, and then queenside castling or something like that

Dr. Funkenstein: Spirit, Minasian paid in a lump for all the sorrows of Petrosian's major pieces, all that Minasian killed in the fury of his spear
Sep-15-07  Emma: A Game like this make you realise that people are world champions because they are the best tacticions. Everything else is just style

Breunor: blingice: That doesn't do anything: Qxd4.

I don't think this works, after Qxd4, I think black can play Nf3 ch nabbing the queen.

al wazir: If 28...Qc5, does white have anything better than 29. Rxc5 Nxc5 30. h8=Q+ Rxh8 31. Bxh8 ?

Not sure, how about 29 g5 ch? If N x g5, R x Q may be better here.

Sep-15-07  mallocks: <al wazir> Rybka suggests the following line following 28...Qc5:

17-ply (+7.22) 29.Raf1 b6 30.R1f3 Ba6 31.Rxc5 Bxd3 32.Rh5+ Kg6

Sep-16-07  GrandPatzerSCL: It's nice of Minasian to play through to checkmate, despite knowing the mate was coming. I appreciate that kind of stuff, as do others, I'm sure.

kevin86: A one in a million game. White sacrifices queen and rook to mate with a pawn!!

Much too much of black's army is left on the starting blocks. The rooks and bishop are as useful as Christmas tree lights in mid July.

Sep-24-07  patzerboy: Yikes! wrong Tigran.

[egg on face]

Sep-24-07  Davolni: Just by looking this game, I think young Petrosian deserves his name!!!
Oct-06-09  WhiteRook48: if it was any world champion then it would be Tal not Petrosian

sevenseaman: The only thing I wanted to verify was Minasian's Fide rating!

sevenseaman: This is for the first time I learn that there were two Petrosians; V the positional wizard and WC, and L here.

I find this game from L equally worthy of V and indeed was mentally attributing it to the latter.
