plang: Game 3 of their 10 game match that finished 2-2; 8..Bxc3+ had been played in game 1. Adams new move 9..cxd? worked out poorly; in games 5 and 9 he played 8..cxd to avoid the rook recapture that Seirawan played here to obtain a clear edge. 11..d5 was probably best but Adams was already much worse. Adams 12..h6! attempted to entice Seirawan into 13 Bxh6..gxf 14 Bxf8..Qxf8 15 Be2 with an extra pawn but no kingside attack; Seirawn wanted more. Seirawan used a lot of time on move 15 considering several alternatives (15 c5, 15 h4, 15 Qa4, 15 Ne5) before playing 15 Qd1?; after the game the two players agreed that Black would have had little chance to save the game after the straightforward 15 Bd3!..Qd6 16 0-0..Bxc3+ 17 Qxc3. Seirawan had counted on playing 23 Bb1?! only to realize that after 23..Rfc8! Black would have had good counterplay; he was forced to allow the perpetual check.
