plang: Played in the last (9th) round; Sokolov had already clinched first place. By avoiding e4 Sokolov stayed away from the sharpest lines in the English Defense. In Plachetka-Kengis Vienna 1990 Black played 7..a5; 7..Nf6 was new. The whole set-up looks shaky for Black; after 9 Nf4 Sokolov already considered White to have a large advantage. 21..Qxb5 already seemed like desperation and after 25 Qg5! Black was busted. The defense 26..Nc4 would have been answered by 26 Qh6..gxh 27 Ng5..Nf6 28 d5 mating.
