plang: One of the ideas behind 8 Rb1 is to give White the ability to answer ..Nc6 with d5 without sacrificing the exchange. 10..Bxc3+ is considered dangerous for Black and is usually avoided. 13..Bc7 (with the idea of ..Ba5 delaying the support of the pawn chain with c4) has supplanted the older 13..Bg7 as the main line. The sharpest lines are 16 d6 or 16 f5; 16 Ba3 is a quieter alternative. Earlier in the year 21 c4..Qxc6 had been played in S.Ivanov-Tseitlin St Petersburg-Beersheeva 1998; 21 Qe3 was new. After 23..Bd3 24 Rxd3..cxd 25 d7..Qxe5 26 fxe..b5 27 Rd1..Bc7 28 c4 White would have had a strong initiative.

Yusupov after 25..Qxe5?!:

"Black loses the game only because he waits too long before bringing his bishop back into the game with b6-b5."

Yandemirov's last chance to free the bishop without losing material would have been 29..b5 30 exf+..Kf7 31 Be5..Bd8 32 g4..h6. Instead it cost a pawn to free the bishop and Ivanov was able to force the d-pawn through.
