 | | suenteus po 147: First!!
Lucky for Bacrot that he's primarily a 1.d4 player, otherwise he would be ground out immediately in Kamsky's Ruy Lopez. |
 |
| May-17-06 | | Kangaroo: The game Bacrot vs Kamsky, 2006 clearly shows that Bacrot's first move against Kamsky may happen to be <1. e4>, with quite unpredictable response from Black. The outcome is not predictable either. |

 | | suenteus po 147: <Kangaroo> I agree that it's impossible to know the outcome of anything until it happens, but it's fun to predict! :) As to the game you referenced: Kamsky was trying to make the Sicilian, Kan work at Corus and with disastrous results. For this tournament he has relied on the Ruy Lopez (C88) against 1.e4 instead and it has won him the lead in a category 20 tournament. If Bacrot does play 1.e4 (which in my opinion is foolish without some incredible novelty prepared) Kamsky will play into a Ruy Lopez from which, only Ponomariov has been able to escape as white. |
 |
| May-17-06 | | FrenchFrog: 1.d4...1.e4 would be pure madness from Bacrot. But who knows? |
 |
| May-17-06 | | Kangaroo: <suenteus po 147> I agree that if Bacrot starts with <1. e4> the most plausible response from Kamsky will be <1 ... e5>. What I have to disagree with is your confidence that Black can easily equalize or even win after that. Despite several examples from this tournament, such as Topalov vs Anand, 2006 -- or Anand vs Kamsky, 2006 -- the life of Black is not a piece of cake after <1. e4 e5>! The game we are discussing is a brilliant example of what can happen after <1. e4 e5> ... - is it not? By the way, if Bacrot starts with <1. d4>, what can be expected from Kamsky? He used to play so many openings - we will see tomorrow what he selects. |

 | | Maatalkko: Hopefully he doesn't try the a6 Slav again. Topalov thrashed him in that - I wasn't surprised. The a6 Slav has always seemed like a goofy opening to me. |
 |
| May-17-06 | | vizir: Maatalkko -> everybody in the top 10 plays the a6 Slav :-) |

 | | trumbull0042: I would personally love to see 1. e4 e5 2. Nc3!?
Why do certain openings fall totally out of fashion at the GM level? Do GMs religiously stick to their repertoire, or have they concluded that only a handful of openings don't have the final outcome written all over them? I think the no-draw rule makes Sofia fertile ground for experimentation. |
 |
May-18-06
 | | refutor: for a lot of the 1.e4 e5 openings (other than the lopez and petroff) it's fairly easy to open up the e-file, trade off the rooks and queen and get a drawish position |

May-18-06
 | | trumbull0042: The position looks quite favorable for Bacrot after 28...Bg6. |

May-18-06
 | | trumbull0042: There must be a very good reason why Bacrot didn't play 29. Rxe6. |
 |
May-18-06
 | | trumbull0042: I honestly hope Bacrot knows what he's doing right now... |
