Jun-01-06  orio24: Did anybody run an engine to evaluate the moves 9. ♘g5 ♗d7 10. ♗c4 h6 etc.?
Jun-01-06  orio24: Anyway, very interesting game.
Jun-01-06  orio24: First I couldn't get what black would play after 12. ♘xf7. But now I think it would be 12...♖h7 with the idea 13...g6 or 13...g5 winning the two pieces for the rook (and a pawn).
Jun-01-06  percyblakeney: Carlsen got in trouble quite early in the game after dubious opening play. Radjabov probably missed the best continuation at a couple of occasions, 20. ... Bb5 followed by Nd3 is one possibility that could have been more problematic to handle for Carlsen.
Jun-01-06  percyblakeney: ...but looking closer at it all I wonder if there is much in it. During the game I thought black had good winning chances at move 18-19 but it was probably not so. After 12. Nxf7 black should play g6 before Rh7, otherwise 13. Ng5+ looks very good for white.

I don't think Rh7 is a good idea because then follows. 13. Ng5+ g6 and g5 isn't even possible 14. Nxh7 Qg7 15. Qxh6 Qxh6 16. Nf6+ Kd8 17. Bxh6 !! with overwhelming advantage for white.

Better would be to play g6 immediatly.

<orio24: Did anybody run an engine to evaluate the moves 9. Ng5 Bd7 10. Bc4 h6 etc.?> After 7. Nd5 the engine says even maybe with the slightest advantage for black.

Up to including 9. .. Bd7 it's still equal with mini-advantage for black.

11. Qh5 is a clear error but black looses tempo by 12. g6 instead of Rc8

And after 22. .. Bxf5 all chances where gone and the draw just a question of time

Jun-01-06  MoonlitKnight: Radjabov was definitely familiar with the Rh7 idea, since he employed the same theme in L Dominguez vs Radjabov, 2004 where he had a winning position with black after 12 moves.

7.Nd5 looked like a simple calculation error by Carlsen, probably missing 7...Nf6 8.Bg5 Bxd5 9.Bxf6 Qa5+ with a large advantage for black. 7.Ng5 might have been an interesting try, but it was probably premature, too.
