Jun-28-06  GlennOliver: Incidentally, 22. .... Nxd5 leaves Black with a playable end-game, albeit at a significant disadvantage.
Jun-28-06  weisyschwarz: "Seventh Heaven" was perhaps than my pun, "Rook out below!"
Jun-28-06  CapablancaFan: <GlennOliver><Incidentally, 22. .... Nxd5 leaves Black with a playable end-game, albeit at a significant disadvantage.> How? If 22...Nxd5 23.Nxd5. Now white would have a knight in a supreme position and it cannot be dislodged. The other knight on d7 would still be under attack with nowhere to go.If Qd7 to protect it then Raa7 with the f7 pawn falling next move. Lol. Believe me, there was no way Pentela Harikrishna could save this game.

offramp: That is the most rapacious rook on the 7th rank I've ever seen.
Jun-29-06  Runemaster: Some film puns for this game:

The Seventh Steal

Seventh Samurai

or just

Seven

Jul-01-06  weisyschwarz: <babakova. I hate the TV-show 'seventh heaven'.>

Personally, I think you need to stage a coup against those forcing you to watch it!

Jul-01-06  fgh: Just to make sure it's not little, this game was also played in the 7th round :-)
Oct-12-06  positionalgenius: Great queen sac by Rublevsky...
Feb-13-09  KERESOV: The Rook on the 7th rank destroyed everything along it's path ... that makes the Queen Sacrifice so pleasing and adds aesthetic value to the game. Just beautiful chess by GM Sergei Rublevsky ... reminds me of the Torre-Lasker Moscow 1925 game !

al wazir: Not at all difficult, when identified as a puzzle.

After 22. Rxa1 I expected black to try to hold onto the threatened ♘s with 22...Qc8. (It doesn't work.) In any event, white posts both ♖s on the seventh rank. That and getting a ♖ and two minor pieces for a ♕ is a good deal any day.

Oct-20-18  landshark: I didn't try to calculate the whole thing out - the sacrifice starting with 21.Rxb7 looks so promising, I'd not hesitate to play that in a blitz game. Doubling your rooks on the 7th rank in exchange for giving up the Queen for a rook and a bishop just makes a lot of sense to me -
Oct-20-18  FSR: 21.Rxb7 Rxa1 22.Rxa1 Qd8 23.Raa7 cries out to be played.

Oct-20-18  mel gibson: I saw the solution move but then I thought
no - the Queen can't be lost.

Stockfish 9 agrees only with the first move
but Black doesn't take the white Queen.

21.Rxb7

wtpy: I agree that Rb7 is pretty easy to see but Rublevsky had to see it before he played Qa1 which increases the difficulty a bit.
Oct-20-18  Walter Glattke: I've tested the option 21.-Rxa1 22.Rxa1 Nf6 23.Rxc7 Nxe4 24.Raa7 Rg7 25.Bd3 Nxc3 26.Ng5 Kg8 and genral change with 27.Nxf7 Rxf7 28.Rxf7 Qxf7 29.Rxf7 Kxf7 with won ending for white.

agb2002: The three defenseless pieces on Black's second rank suggest 21.Rxb7 Rxa1 22.Rxa1:

A) 22... Qc(d)8 23.Raa7 wins another piece.

B) 22... Ne8 23.Rxd7 Nf6 24.Rda7 Nxe4 25.Bd3

B.1) 25... Nxc3 26.Ng5 and now 26... Rg7 loses to 27.Ra8.

B.2) 25... f5 26.Bxe4 fxe4 27.Ng5 wins.

C) 22... Nf6 23.Rxc7 Nxe4 24.Raa7 Rg7 25.Bd3 Nxc3 26.Ng5 looks winning. For example, 26... Kg8 27.Nxf7 Rxf7 28.Rxf7 Qxf7 29.Rxf7 + - [B vs p].

<21.?>

Is it me or is this an easy Saturday? I don't really see very promising defenses after <21.Rxb7> having looked at the solution I sincerely doubt 22....c4 accomplishes anything, after which the vacuum cleaner that's Ra7 can just continue cleaning up. It makes up for a nice series of moves in seventh heaven though.

<21....Rxa1>, which may not be Black's best due to <22.Rxa1 Qd8 23.Raa7 +-> Black's losing another piece and the White Rooks are having the time of their lives.

Oct-20-18  TheaN: Okay, fair enough, 22....Nf6 is worth a mention, after which White has to be a tad bit careful. I'd assume <22....Nf6 23.Rxc7 Nxe4?!> if, probably not best <24.Bd3!> first. The Rook can follow later. Obviously 24....f5 25.Raa7 fails quite fast, so <24....Nf6 25.Ng5> +- and White's calling all the shots.
