Kibitzer's Corner
Feb-17-07  Troglodyte: Beautiful defense by Ivanchuk, but what if Black plays:

19... Bxf3 20. Bxf3 Qh4 <attacking f2>

21. Rc2 Qf4 <threatening Qh2. This seems to give black a big innitiative.>

plang: Played in the second round; this was the start of a very poor tournament for Shirov as he finished last with -4 just a few months after his match win over Kramnik and his second place finish at Linares ahead of Kasparov and Kramnik. This was Ivanchuk's only win as he finished fifth at 4.5-4.5. 16..Rg6 was new; 16..Be8 had been played in the little known game Flogaus - Fochtler 1993. 20..Nxf2? 21 Ne5 would have won immediately for White. Ivanchuk was critical of 26..e3? recommending instead 26..h5 with advantage to Black. Shirov lost a tempo with 27..Qe4+? after which his game was difficult; 27..Rg6 and 27..Rf8 were alternatives.
