plang: Played in the third round; Adams went on to share 1st place with Kramnik and Svidler with an undefeated 6-3. Adams played 9 d3 because Almasi had little experience with the "quiet" systems where d4 is delayed. 14..b4 was new and Adams felt it was as strong as the standard 14..c5. Still, it was unusual to completely forgo ..c5 with 16..Nc6!? Adams was critical of 18..Rxe6 recommending 18..fxe covering the d5 square. The alternative 21..Nxd4 22 Qxd4..Nxd5 23 exd looks good for White but at least here there wouldn't have been a knight anchored on c6. Adams recommended 30..Rae8 31 Rc2..h5 as a tougher defense.
