plang: This seventh round win was instrumental in Adams finishing joint first with Kramnik and Svidler. Anand had a rare off tournament drawing his other eight games. 10..Nxe2+ was new; 10..e6 and 10..Bd7 were standard and Sax had played 10..Qc7 in a loss to Adams in the 1997-8 German league. Anand's 13..cxb?! was sharp creating a potential outside passed pawn but strengthening White's center. With 14 Bd2?! Adams declined the opportunity to win material with 14 e5..dxe 15 Ba7 when it is not clear that Black gets sufficient compensation. Anand's queenside counterplay progressed quickly and with 21..Bb2 he won the exchange. He could have held onto the material with 24..Rb8 maintaining some advantage. Instead, he returned the exchange with 24..Qc7? apparently confident that he could draw. Adam's clever pawn sacrifice 28 c5! obstructed Black's defense on the d4-a7 diagonal. Seirawan did not understand Anands 38-40th moves recommending leaving the queen on d4 playing ..h5 and ..Kf8-e7 and he does not see how White makes progress. It is not clear whether White can win after 41..Qd4 42 Qxd4..Bxd4 43 Be2..h5; that was probably Black's best chance. After 49..Qxf2 50 Qxf2..Bxf2 51 Bf3 the ending is lost as the bishop on h5 ties the king to the weak f-pawn. 50..Qxa6 51 Qf5+..Kf8 52 Qh6+..Kg9 53 Be4!..Qa7 54 Qh7+..Kf8 55 Qh8+..Ke7 56 Bc6 would have led to mate.
