  Albertan: On move 28 Varley could have played 28...Bd3 (which is better than 28...Ba4) and play might have continued:

28... Bd3 29. Rc3 Qa6 30. Bb7 Qb5 31. Qd1 Be2 32. Qc1 Qa5 33. Bf4 Ba6 34. Bxa6 Qxa6

  Albertan: The move 32...Bg5?? was a blunder.Instead Varley could have tried 32...Qa4 however even after:

32... Qa4 33. Qb7 Qa5 34. Kh2 e5 35. Bxe5 Bh4 36. g3 Bg5 37.h4 Bh6 38. Qf3 Bg7 39. Bd6 Qa4 40. Rb7 Qxa2 41. Bxf8 Bxf8 42. e4 he would be lost.
