Ron: The position after White's 37th move

I wondered why not: 37. ... RxR 38. NxR

It seems that Black was in time trouble. However after 37. RxR 38. NxR I am inclined to think that with best play on both sides White can win the endgame from this line. I would be interested in seeing analysis.

Aug-15-06  Albertan: Hi Ron, I put the position into Shredder 8, and waited until the computer had analyzed at least 20 ply before going to the next move. At the end of the analysis the program was using endgame tablebases which confirmed the result as a draw. Here is the analysis Shredder 8 generated:

37... Rxd7 38. Nxd7 f6 39.Nb6 Bb4
40. Nc4 f5 41. Kf3 Kf7 42. g4 g6
43. g5 hxg5 44. fxg5 Kg7 45. Ke2 Bc3
46. Kd3 Be1 47. Ke2 Bb4 48. Kd3 Kh7
49. Kd4 Kg7 50. h3 Be1 51. Kd3 Kg8
52. Ke3 Bc3 53. Kf4 Kg7 54. h4 Be1
55. exf5 exf5 56. h5 gxh5 57. Kxf5 Bc3 58. Ne3 h4 59. Kg4 Bd2 60. Nf5+ Kf7 61. Nd6+ Ke6 62. g6 Bc3 63. Ne4 Bg7
64. Kxh4 Kf5 65.Nc5 Kxg6 66. Kg4 Kf6 67. Kf4 Ke7 68. Ke3 Kd6 69. Nb3 Kd5 70. Nxa5 Bf8 71. Kd3 Bb4 72. Nb3 Be1 73. Nd2 Kc6 74. Ne4 Bb4 75. Nd2 Kd5 draw

Aug-16-06  supertimchan: This ending is clearly drawn without checking with the computer.

Dr. Funkenstein: Saying something is clearly drawn (especially without any analysis to bakc it up) is a little fishy. There are a lot of "drawn positions" that look drawn to us, but for someone with excellent endgame skill they may not be. Checking with the computer in these types of positions after the game is very helpful.
Aug-16-06  NateDawg: According to Chessmaster 10, White can win this game anyways. Here is a line it provides:

40...Kf8 41. Ra7 Rd4 42. Nd6 g5 43. fxg5 hxg5 44. Rf7+ Kg8 45. Rc7 g4+ 46. Kh4

All attempts to hold on the pawn at g4 fail, e.g (46...Bd2 47. Kh5! Rxa4 48. Kg6 Bh6 49. Rc8+ Bf8 50. Ne8 Rf4 51. gxf4 Kh8 52. Nf6 a4 53. Rxf8#). Therefore Black must play 46...Bxd6 47. exd6 Rxd6 48. Rc5 Kf7 49. Rxa5 Rd4 50. Rg5 Rxa4 51. Rxg4 and White has obtained a won position.

Aug-16-06  NateDawg: Play could continue 51...Ra2 52. h3 e5 53. Kg5 Ke6 54. h4 Kd5 55. h5 e4 56. h6 e3 57. h7 Ra8 58. Rh4 e2 59. Rh1 Kd4 60. g4 Kd3 61. Kg6 Ra6+ 62. Kh5 Ra8 63. g5 Rf8 64. g6 Rf1 65. Rh3+ Ke4 66. Rh4+ Kd3 67. h8=Q e1=Q 68. Qd4+ Ke2 69. Re4+ Kf3 70. Rxe1 Rxe1 71. g7 Re8 72. Qd5+ Kg3 73. g8=Q+ Rxg8 74. Qxg8+ and White wins.
