Jan-06-07   RookFile: Yes, I almost made the same point as Tabanus, then deleted it. We could have no problem talking about who suggested Qd2 for about 20 pages. For example, Tomlinsky organized a forum on this at the time, and the simple fact of the matter is, when you scroll back through all the pages in this game, you see Tomlinsky as being the first to bring up the Qd2 idea. Mind you, I have no particular reason to side with anybody, I thought we should have played 18. Bg5.
Jan-06-07   FHBradley: Why do some people call <sharpnova> 'he'? I've always thought he was an angry lady from the Czech Republic, or Slovakia, perhaps.

Jan-06-07   sharpnova: To continue is despicable.

I play corresondence chess (via email) and I've had many opponents that play on in lost positions to postpone the inevitable.

Even a patzer can see that this position is lost for WHITE. Black has more than equalized and the position is a dead loss for the world team.

GMAN. Kudos to you for a game well played. You certainly showed chessgames.com that there is more to being a champion than having a couple dozen posters yapping, whining, and toting engine-analysis.

My vote solidly stands at 0-1 and I will continue to vote so until the rest of you admit defeat or GMAN is forced to checkmate our king.

I'm ashamed that technically I'm a member of this team that represents the following ideals:

engine-analyze first, ask for human oversight later if at all. (in the case of this game.. never)

drag out lost positions to postpone defeat

make insults and wisecracks at the progressive member of your own ranks who wishes to save face by instigating a prompt and much justified resignation.

bring shame to chessgames.com

bring embarassment to GMAN.

GMAN. Well played. Good game. At least in spirit, I resign on behalf of the chessgames.com team. I wish you well in your future matches and have learned a great deal from studying your masterful play.

It was an artful experience. I learned much chess from you and much about the low level of integrity of humans in general from the chessgames.com team.

Eyal: <Why do some people call <sharpnova> 'he'? I've always thought he was an angry lady from the Czech Republic, or Slovakia, perhaps.> I suggest that from now on we refer to <sharpnova> as "it".
Jan-06-07   gorash: beware, he will handle it as respect :)
Jan-06-07   CAPA2422: <sharpnova> what is Gman's next move?

Jan-06-07   CAPA2422: <sharpnova> writes- "i have never played in an otb tournament, but nonetheless am of approximately GM strength."

LOL.... get a clue.

Jan-06-07   CAPA2422: <sharpnova> is a chess beginner. He is not very good at the game.

His rating is probably around 0900.

I agree. So why don't you stop?

Karpova: I expect GMAN to make his move today. Will be interesting to see if he chooses 39...axb5 or 39...Re7 though i think he'll go for the former.

Karpova: Why does he receive so much attention? Anybody notices at first glance that he's a troll (and not a very creative one) - who else would post a message to GMAN on the only page he can't and won't have access to...

Eyal: <Why does he receive so much attention?> Well, because he (or it) is an amusing curiosity, really. You can't say it's disturbing the team's efforts at this stage of the game.
Jan-06-07   hidude: what is our total eval for this position?

Order of eval preference:
Rybka
Shredder
Fritz
Others

Jan-06-07   Nibiru: Hello, I've just got an idea. If Sharpnova is really that good why not play a game against him after this one? If we lose we will all lose our memberships, if Sharpnova loses he will lose his member. Deal?

I see you're full of creative ideas regarding our next games:-)

<Nibiru: Maybe it's an idea to play a game with living pieces next time. The pieces who are being captured will be decapitated. I'm sure this game will be followed with great interest (especially by the pieces). Maybe Steppenwolf wants to volunteer.>

Tabanus: <RookFile: Tomlinsky organized a forum on this at the time> Exactly. And so did <monad>. This can be seen from <twinlark>'s announcements. From 15 October on <jepflast> still hosted the line, but on that date 18.Qd2 was found and analyses continued in these two now non-existent fora. Later, after 17...Qd7 was played (and 18.Nd4 had a big lead), 18.Qd2 was hosted by <OhioChessFan>.

human brain: white is almost winning (no saving for black has been found)

Rybka: 2.20 for Rook Ending 1 (see for further information: Section F User: RandomVisitor)

Jan-06-07   Thorsson: <Karpova: <FHBradley> No he seems to be a man. <Chessmoron>'s post on Chessgames Challenge: The World vs A Nickel, 2006>

To some of us it has always been obvious that sharpie was male. Actually I can't ever recall a lady troll in the 12 years I've been visiting message boards - and that includes a spell moderating several.

Small loss for sharpie I reckon.

Hugin: i expect 39..axb5 and then we must do 40 a6! to still have a winning chance.

1. 39...axb5 40.a6 Re1 41.Qa7+ Kh6

42.Qf7!! only winning attempt Qe8 43.Qxd5 h4 44.Qxd6 Re6 45.Qa3 Qb8+ 46.Kg1 Qd8 47.Rf4 b4 48.Qa1 2. = 42.Qb6 prolly leads to a draw Qc1 43.Qd8 Rh1+ 44.Kg3 Qe1+ 45.Kf4 Qe4+ 46.Kg3 Qxd4 47.Qf8+ Kg5 48.Qe7+ Kh6 49.Qf8+

If he tryes 39...Re7 it's a clear win in my eyes..
2. 39...Re7
40.bxa6 Rd7 41.Rf1 Qd8 42.Qb7!!
