Jan-28-13		LastDaysofSaloFlohr: Determined defence from Makogonov who was in the top ten c.1940. He didn't get the GM title until much later because I don't think he ever played outside the Soviet Union. Rabinovich was an endgame specialist who had drawn with <Capablanca (Moscow 1925)> and beaten Rubinstein. Rabinovich also played a great Petrosianic game (pre-Petrosian!) against <Belavenets (USSR 1934/5)> - by retreating his pieces to the back rank when White's position just collapses. (All right, Belavenets didn't play so well but even so the game looks very modern.) It's in Kotov and Yudovich's Soviet School of Chess. (I heard Yudovich was a KGB man - he oversaw the energetic Soviet chess propaganda machine and made sure no-one mentioned Alekhine - before he was "rehabilitated" - and eulogized Chigorin over Steinitz.) Makogonov usually appears in best game collections (e.g. Smyslov) as the loser but his games are well worth a look. And of course, as everyone knows, he was an early coach for the young Harry Weinstein - otherwise known as Gary Kasparov. Still, Rabinovich should have won this game I think - it's difficult to pinpoint where exactly, but before White played f4-f5.
