Ulhumbrus: On 25 Rxc4 Nb6! traps the Rook, controlling its square of retreat a4 as well as attacking it.
Aug-31-06  EmperorAtahualpa: <Ulhumbrus> But White can counter it 25.Rxc4 Nb6 with 26.Nb7 Nxc4 27.Nxd8.

Next to 25.Rc2 I'm also considering 25.Ra1 Nxc3 26.Rxc4. What about that?

Aug-31-06  TheBB: <Ulhumbrus> 25. Rxc4 Nb6 26. Nb7 and white is fine.
Aug-31-06  InspiredByMorphy: <Emperor< <TheBB> 25.Rxc4 Nb6 26.Nb7 Rdb8

jtd200: but what happens after... 25.Rxc4 Nb6 26.Nb7 Rdb8 27.R4c7... looks like the black knight and rook might be able to win back the pawn, but I dunno'..

  Ulhumbrus: 25 Rxc4 Nb6 27 Nb7 Rd7 and both White's R and N are threatened with capture. Then on 28 Nc5 Re7 White's R is trapped.
Aug-31-06  TheBB: <InspiredByMorphy> <jtd200> Ok so 25.Rxc4 Nb6 26.Nb7 Rb8 (or Rd7) is answered by 27. Rc5, and white is better.
Aug-31-06  InspiredByMorphy: <TheBB> I stand corrected. Looks good.

  Ulhumbrus: 25 Rxc4 Nb6 26 Nb7 Nxc4 27 Nxd8 Rb6 (squeezing the N and threatening to win it by ...Kg8-f8-e8) 28 Ra1 Rb3 29 Rc1 Rb6 30 Ra1 repeats moves. Can Black do better than this? On 25 Rxc4 Nb6 26 Nb7 Nxc4 27 Nxd8 a4 28 Nc6 Rb2 29 Ra1 a3 30 Nb4 Rb3 31 Rc1 Rb2 32 Ra1 repeats moves again.
Sep-02-06  InspiredByMorphy: <Ulhumbrus> It appears that your evaluation of 26. ...Nxc4 is correct. It is much better than the move I proposed earlier ( 26. ...Rb8) . After 25.Rxc4 Nb6 26.Nb7 Nxc4 27.Nxd8 and now instead, 27. ...a4 and black can just push the a pawn dangerously closer to promoting. Black has adequate defense of that pawn as well.

Some sample lines from here which both benifit black include...

28.Nc6 a3 29.Ra1 Rb3

or 29.Kf3 Rb1! (if 30.Rxb1 Nd2+) 30.Rc2
Rb2 31.Nb4 a2 32.Rc1 Nd2+ 33.Ke3 Nb3

I have now come to the conclusion that Leko correctly analyzed the position by determining the valued of blacks passed a pawn in your variation, which is why he didnt accept the pawn with 25.Rxc4?
