  JointheArmy: Very nice.
Jan-13-07   MoonlitKnight: According to Bologan's own notes in New in Chess, 11.h4 was homecooking. But he had only counted on ...cxd4 and he even wrote down the move on the scoresheet when Vaganian grabbed the d4 pawn, but he managed to fight off the Armenian's novel idea over the board.

notyetagm: This game finished in 3rd place in the most recent Chess Informant Best Game prize competition.

After 19 Rh3xh7!! Bologan gives the mating line 19 ... Kg8xRh7 20 Ra1-h1+ Kh7-g8 21 Qg3xg6 Re8-e7 22 Bf6xg7 Re7xBg7 23.Qe6-e8#.

Jul-20-09   YoungEd: Could 12. ...Nxe2 be a mistake? It seems to me that it just helps White--gets the King out of the pin and lets the a1R slide to h1 when needed.

An Englishman: Good Evening: I was surprised to see 7...0-0 in a game as recently played as this one; wasn't it refuted during the Eighties?
Jul-20-09   nolanryan: super beautiful

RandomVisitor: 12...Ndc6 is worth a look.

13...g6 or 13...Kh8 also worth a look.

15...Ng4 16.Qxg4 e5 might equalize

Jul-20-09   UnsoundHero: Especially pleasing is the line 14 h5 Qxc3 15 hxg6 Qxe5+ 16 Kd2 Qxa1 17 gxf7+ Kxf7 18 Qf4+ Kg8 19 Bxh7+ Kh8 20 Bg6+ Kg8 21 Qf7 mate.
Jul-20-09   Garech: How is the poisoned pawn variation of the french? There is no Qxg7 ... ?

whiteshark: <Garech> I think it begins with <7.Qg4> and then it^s blacks turn to allow 8.Qxg7 or prevent it with <7...0-0>.

Sem: Beautiful: in his hunt for the Black King White disregards almost every move by his opponent..
Jul-20-09   totololo: I think that 0-0 is wrong in this position. The attack is just there due to the high unbalance of forces... I don't see any merit in this game.
Jul-20-09   mindkontrolle: very instructive game, i always have trouble confronting the french defense

whiteshark: <totololo: I think that 0-0 is wrong in this position.> It's a well known move, very solid and interesting.

Jul-20-09   randomsac: I love the pun, especially considering that the opening is considered a <poisoned> pawn variation. So, <poisoned> French fries... yeah...
Jul-20-09   lzromeu: < notyetagm: After 19 h3xh7!! Bologan gives the mating line 19 ... g8xh7 20 a1-h1+ h7-g8 21 g3xg6 e8-e7 22 f6xg7 e7xg7 23.e6-e8#.>

23.G6-e8#

Jul-20-09   lzromeu: <totololo think that 0-0 is wrong in this position. The attack is just there due to the high unbalance of forces>

Indeed, maybe 0-0-0 be better, or another pawn structure.

TheDestruktor: The attack after 12...Nxe2 was demolishing.

I believe that the best defensive move for black here would be 12...Ndf5.

It brings an extra piece to defense, while the white knight can't join the attack because it is needed to protect c3. It also reinforces the defense of g7, and (important point) both black knights are still on board, so 13.Bf6 followed by 14.Bxf5 would be answered simply by 14...Nxf5.

I believe it would be very hard for white to maintain an attack after 12...Ndf5.

Jul-20-09   drpoundsign: I almost beat Chessica online today-almost. used speeded up time controls for her b/c not too much time for chess at work
Jul-20-09   dumbgai: Very nice ending sequence!
Jul-20-09   DarthStapler: I'm very disappointed to see a GOTD involving Bologan without a pun about how his name sounds like balogna
Jul-20-09   chillowack: This is one of the most beautiful games I've ever seen! Reminiscent of Tal at his finest.
