plang: 16 Nf5 had been the standard move in this ultra sharp variation of the meran. Gelfand attributed 16 Nf3 to Kramnik. It was voted 2nd best opening innovation of Informant #70. The idea of the gambit was to put pressure on the e file after 18 Re1. Gelfand avoids 22 Nf7 as he felt that black would get ample compensation for the exchange. Gelfand could have tried 30 b4 which wins after 30..cb 31 Rad1 and leads to an exchange up ending with winning chances after 30..Ra6 31 Bc5. 36..Rf5 was an error leading to the loss of a pawn after the very clever 40 Rg5 with the threat of doubling on the 5th rank. 36..g6 was better. Gelfand felt that he would have maintained winning chances if he hadn't pushed his h pawn prematurely with 55 h5.
