plang: 9..dxc, taking the pawn, had been played in Gufeld - Katalymov 1969 giving Black reasonable play. 9..0-0? was new and a serious mistake as after 10 e4! White developed a serious initiative with the Black Knight on a6 misplaced. Anand felt that perhaps taking the pawn with 13..Qxd4 would have given Black better chances though after 14 Qc2..Qd8 15 Rfd1..Nd7 16 Bf4 White has clear compensation. Had Granda Zuniga played 19..Re8 he could have responded to 21 c5 with 21..b4 avoiding having his Bishop entombed. With Black's queenside pieces misplaced Anand was able to quickly develop a winning attack. Black lost on time but there was no defense to the threat of 40 Rxg7+ and 41 Rg3. This win gave Anand a one point lead over Svidler going into the last round. Anand clinched first when Svidler was not able to seriously challenge Anand with the White pieces in the last round.
