Kibitzer's Corner
Jan-04-07   alicefujimori: A nice display by black, especially taking into account the rating difference. 10.h4 was played probably to avoid the recently popular Chinese Dragon variation. Black could have transposed to the Soltis variation by playing 10..h5 11.0-0-0 Rc8 12.Bb3 which avoided white's most dangerous reply in the Soltis. 11.Bd3 was not so good because it blocked the queen from exerting pressure on the d-file and this allowed black to equalise rather easily with 11...e5 12...Be6 and 13...d5. Therefore, 11.Bb3 or 11.Be2 is much better. After 20...Qf4, one sees the reason why Kb1 is almost always a useful move in the Open Sicilian. Black simply exchange white's strongest piece into a favourable endgame. 21...Kf6 was a very good move that brought the king out into the center ready for the upcoming endgame. Of course, black must had in mind that white's 24.Ng5 does not in fact threaten the h pawn before playing 21...Kf6. White missed this and still played 24.Ng5 when it might had been better to play the interesting 24.Rde1 preventing the exchange of rooks and creating indirect pressure along the e-file. Then white can try to attack that weak f4 pawn with Rh4.

Basically, a good game by black and quite a poor performance from a person who has a 2310 rating.
