Kibitzer's Corner
Jan-16-07  belgradegambit: Draw???? Boo, hiss. Gee how the mighty have fallen. Van der Wiel grants a draw to a much weaker opponent when he has significant winning chances. White's a pawn is not going anywhere and Black is a pawn up with central dominance!
Jan-16-07  euripides: This does look puzzling. I'm wondering if White can sacrifice the exchange for the white-squared bishop. One idea is 24.f3 exf3 25.Qxd3 when 25...Rxd3 26.Rxc8 looks OK for White (maybe not), but 25...Rxc1 is a problem. So perhaps 24.f3 exf3 25.Rxc3 Bxc3 (if 25...Qxc3 ? 26.Qxc3 Bxc3 27.Re3) 26.Qxd3 Bxe1 27.Qxf3:

when I think 27...Qc1 can be met by 28.Qf1, and 27...Bb4 (contesting the g1-a7 diagonal) might be met by 28.Bb7. White may be OK here.

Jan-16-07  belgradegambit: Sorry in your diagram you missed the shot Bxa5! winning. (Black can pick the bishop back up with Q-c5+)
Jan-17-07  euripides: <belgrade> yes I had missed 27...Bxa5, so the question is whether White can then exploit the displaced bishop to attack the king. 28.Be3 is met by 28...Bc3. After 28.Bd4 Black has 28...Qf5, where I see nothing better than 29.Qc2 and I imagine White is losing, or possibly 28...Bd8 29.Be3 Qc3 30.Qf2 Qf6 (not Qg7? 31.Bd4 with repetition), though he should avoid 28...Qd8 29.Bf6 or 28...Qc1+ 29.Kh2 Bd2 30.Qf6 (or Bxf7+ which I think gives White a perpetual on a8 and d5). So I think Black is winning as you say.
