Eyal: After 33...Qa7 34.Rc8 Rb8 35.Nf7+ Kg7 36.Rxf8 Rxf8 37.Nxe5 White wins the pawn with the queens still on the board - I'm not saying it's a forced win, but it looks stronger.

Sneaky: I think what Eyal was getting at was 33...Qa7 34.Rc8 Rb8 35.Nf7+ and Nxe5, winning a pawn. That's why I said "it looks about the same as my line" -- in both cases Nf7+ and Nxe5 leaves White up a pawn for the endgame.

Mateo: It seems that Anand thought that 34.Nf7+ Kg7 35.Nxe5 Bxe5 36.Qxe5 Qxe5 37.Rxe5 gives drawing hopes for Black in the Rook ending.
Jan-20-07  yanez: Fritz likes white a lot

Eyal: So Anand decides he doesn't want to simplify into the double rook ending with a pawn up.

Yes, I think that rook ending would very likely be drawn.

Jan-20-07  yanez: Frutz likes Qe6 Rb6 Qd7 Rxd6 etc.

madlydeeply: Aren't Anand's attacking chances constrained by king safety? I would conclude that Anand wants to exchange a Q and a R

madlydeeply: although the Knight and Queen like to attack together....
Jan-20-07  yanez: <madlydeeply> afte Qb6 fritz gives white [at the end of the line] 2.13, but only 1.04 after h3

Eyal: 34...Rb2 may have been a mistake. After 34...Rb4, Black could have countered Qe6 with Rd4.

artemis: madlydeeply: all anand has to worry about is a back rank mate. Black needs to worry about an attack coming in on the 7th rank. Therefore, anand wants to keep the queens and both rooks, one rook to help attack, and the other to support the 7th rank demolition of black's kingside.
Jan-20-07  Marmot PFL: Maybe that ending wasn't winnable, so Anand plays for a more complex game.

madlydeeply: Fritz can be so mysterious. I suppose with the pawn on h3, the white pawns become less mobile.

chessic eric: is Anand looking at 36.Rd5 instead of 36.Qd7?
Jan-20-07  Marmot PFL: If Anand plays Nc4 he avoids the queen trade, and still aattacks e5. He also attacks the rook, and then maybe can drive the queen back with his own rooks and win e5 later.

Eyal: After 36.Nc4, White seems to have a big edge.
Jan-20-07  yanez: whites advantage is slashed now, but is still +
-
Jan-20-07  yanez: fritz does like that a lot

madlydeeply: artemis: but with the black queen and rook active, this ties down both white rooks...one must be on g1 protecting g2, and if the other moves off the first rank, then black plays his other rook to 1st rank forcing an exchange and exposing the king. So without a bolthole both white rooks are tied up.

the exchange takes a tempo though.

artemis: madly deeply: ok, but you must remember that the rook move off of the first rank is going to be R_7 threatening Qxh7#, which would come quicker than the exchange followed by a king hunt for black.
Jan-20-07  yanez: fritz thinks Rc2 now, then Ra1 Ra2 Ne8....
